Over 50 years of Rotary Sierra Safaris

Jeff O’Brien, chairman for the Rotary Clubs of Bishop’s annual Sierra Safari reported that this year’s Safari was again a wonderful success.  For over 50 years, The Rotary Club of Bishop has invited other Rotarians to enjoy 3 days of fellowship, excursions,  Saturday evening dinner and a Sunday Trout Breakfast.  A Friday evening reception at Brown’s Town Campground started the Safari.  Saturday excursions included a hike to the Devil’s Postpile, a 4 wheel drive tour to see ancient petroglyphs,  a pistol shoot and multi weapons challenge, a golf tournament at Bishop County Club, a trout Fishing Expedition, and a fall colors  photographic tour.  The second annual Bishop Rotary Rubber Duck Race was held at the Elk’s Park of Bishop.  After  the Safari breakfast, hundreds of small rubber ducks were released in the crystal clear water of Bishop Creek.Tickets were sold for $10 each to sponsor a racing duck.  The racing ducks fought and floated their way downstream towards the finish line.  A percentage from the sale of each duck will benefit Polio Plus.  The fastest 10 ducks won prizes of $50.00 to $300.00.

Jeff thanked the many Bishop merchants who donated gifts for gift baskets to be sold plus he thanked the Bishop Rotary members. Ted Schade and Ed Nahin who donated a handcrafted bookshelf and a beautiful framed photograph of McGee Creek which were auctioned by talented Rotarian Tom Hallenbeck.    Money raised by the clubs will be used for Scholarships in our community.
