Dr. Lee Harman: Miss Vicky's Triumph; A Journey for PolioPlus:

I am excited to share a summary of our Club meeting on the 26th, featuring the inspiring journey of "Miss Vicky" and the team behind the mission. This expedition, recounted by Lee Harmon, resonates deeply with our commitment to Rotary's core values and global initiatives.
During our meeting, Lee shared the remarkable tale of "Miss Vicky's" 9,200-mile journey, echoing our Rotary spirit of determination, fellowship, and unwavering commitment to eradicating polio.
"Miss Vicky" embarked on her historic adventure, navigating challenging terrains, scorching temperatures, and mechanical hurdles. Despite the trials faced, the team's resilience prevailed, exemplifying Rotary's ethos of resilience and solidarity.
Lee emphasized the profound impact of Rotary's PolioPlus program, emphasizing that polio is just one plane ride away. His journey underscored the urgency of vaccination and raised awareness about the disease's preventable nature.
Despite facing 15% slopes and scorching temperatures reaching 107°F, "Miss Vicky" prevailed, thanks to the team's meticulous care and determination. The journey concluded triumphantly in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, marking the end of a challenging adventure spanning 7,600 miles.
One of the significant decisions made during the expedition was to ship "Miss Vicky" back to L.A. to avoid the hazards of night driving on mountain roads teeming with wildlife. This choice not only ensured the safety of the team but also highlighted their pragmatic approach to challenges.
Throughout the expedition, the team found solace in the support received from Rotary members and local communities. Lee, through this journey, raised an astounding $38,656, including $7,500 collected during the journey itself. These funds contribute significantly to Rotary's annual pledge, reinforcing our commitment to eliminating polio forever. Every penny contributed directly to Rotary's PolioPlus program, with the added bonus of a 2:1 match by the Gates Foundation. This substantial contribution brings us closer to meeting Rotary's annual pledge of $50 million to eradicate polio forever.
Lee's narrative and Miss Vicky's odyssey serve as a beacon of inspiration. Their journey exemplifies the spirit of Rotary, reminding us of our collective strength, resilience, and unwavering dedication to service.
