At our November 21st meeting, we had the opportunity to gain insights into the operations and economic impact of the Arlington Municipal Airport from Monroe Whitman, the Airport Operations Manager. His presentation illuminated the significant role the airport plays not only in local aviation but also in the broader aerospace industry.

Monroe shared that the Arlington Municipal Airport, which operates similarly in size to Sea-Tac, is a bustling center for general aviation. It is home to over 580 based aircraft and facilitates approximately 65,000 annual operations. The airport is a critical hub for the aerospace sector, hosting 29 aerospace manufacturers and supporting over 500 manufacturing jobs directly on the premises.

In terms of economic contribution, the airport is impressive:

• It manages more than 179 ground and building leases.
• The revenue generated from these leases totals approximately $4.1 million.
• The airport indirectly supports an estimated 5,500 jobs in and around its vicinity.
• According to the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), it has a total economic impact of $92.2 million annually.

Monroe highlighted the airport's historical significance, noting it served as a naval base from 1943 to 1955. The main runway, just over one mile long, has potential for future expansion—a possibility that is currently being explored as part of a new master plan process. This expansion could position Arlington as a reliever airport for Sea-Tac, although Monroe noted some local resistance due to concerns over increased air traffic.

The airport’s mission is to promote safe, professional operations through innovative community relations, responsible property management, and effective administration. This mission supports its vision to be a community-oriented airport that enhances local economic development.

Furthermore, Monroe discussed recent infrastructure improvements, such as the installation of a new fence line required by the FAA, which not only enhances security but also aligns with regulatory standards.

Each year, the airport's annual fly-in attracts up to 50,000 visitors, showcasing its significant draw and popularity within the aviation community. Monroe concluded by noting the potential revenue growth from expanding hangar facilities, which could generate significant additional income for the airport.
