International Projects: A Collaborative Effort between Everett, Dajabon and Arlington Rotary Clubs
During our meeting on September 14th, we had the privilege of learning about the Shade Garden Projects that were a result of a successful partnership between the Rotary Clubs of Everett and Dajabon, which span from 2015 to 2023. This inspiring endeavor has resulted in positive changes in the lives of many people in the Dajabon region. We also discussed the ongoing work regarding the water project in Dajabon, which our Club has joined as a member in that project.
The Dajabon Project began with a focus on its proximity to the US, making it easier for Rotarians to travel to the project sites. The inception of the project can be traced back to the pilot project's conceptual development by the Dajabon Rotary Club, which included a comprehensive needs assessment and outreach in the Los Miches Village. Subsequently, a grant application was submitted by the Everett Rotary Club, leading to a matching grant from District 5050. The pilot project officially launched in January 2016. One of the primary goals was to establish greenhouses to support agricultural efforts in this region.
Over the years, the project has expanded its reach by recruiting and training more individuals in the region to become entrepreneurs. The program teaches them valuable skills, enabling them to cultivate their own gardens and contribute to the local economy.
However, natural disasters are common in the Dajabon region and posed significant challenges. Some of the greenhouses were damaged or destroyed by these events. Despite these setbacks, the project persevered and evolved. One noteworthy aspect of the project's development is the transition from using logs and branches to using concrete to steel in the shade garden construction. This change has enhanced the durability and sustainability of the greenhouses, ensuring they can withstand the region's challenging environmental conditions.
The Greenhouse Garden Project has grown to include 16 gardens, each serving as a source of fresh produce and economic opportunity for the community. Additionally, shade gardens have been introduced, further diversifying the agricultural efforts in the region.
The collaborative efforts of Rotary clubs, both locally and internationally, have been instrumental in the success of this initiative. A Rotary Matching Grant of $108,000 was secured, with contributions from various Rotary clubs, including Lake Stevens Rotary, South Everett Mukilteo Rotary, Port Gardner Rotary, and the Rotary Club of Everett. District 5050 and The Rotary Foundation also played a significant role in providing funding and support.
This project's success would not have been possible without the invaluable contributions of several partners, including INFOTEP for training, BANFONDESA for microloans, the Ministry of Agriculture for technical assistance, ADETDA for marketing and sales, the US Peace Corps for providing Peace Corps Volunteers, and Washington State University for program evaluation. Additionally, the collaborative efforts of the Dajabon, Everett, and Arlington Rotary Clubs have been critical in terms of funding, technical support, and fostering friendships.
The impact of this project extends beyond shade gardens. It has provided school audio equipment, wheelchairs, school gardens, literacy projects, and even a 13-kilometer water system, showcasing the comprehensive approach Rotary clubs have taken to improve the lives of the people in the Dajabon region.
Some of our Club members had an opportunity to learn more about these projects, as well as other international projects, at an event hosted by the Rotary Club of Everett.

In conclusion, the Shade Garden Project serves as a shining example of Rotary's commitment to sustainable development and community empowerment. The dedication and collaboration of Rotary clubs, partners, and volunteers have created lasting positive change in the lives of the people in the Dajabon region. We look forward to our partnerships with these outstanding Clubs and we look to make an impact with the water project that is advancing.
