Celebrating 50 Years of Service with District Governor Dave Duskin

Our October 3rd meeting featured a profound presentation by District Governor Dave Duskin, who shared insights from his remarkable 50 years of engagement with Rotary. His tenure exemplifies the theme of being "People of Action," and he brought to life the concept that the magic of Rotary is indeed performed through action.

Dave discussed the current Rotary International President's theme of being "Irresistible" — a call to make our clubs so engaging and effective that they become irresistible to potential members. He outlined an action plan that emphasizes "impact," highlighting that our efforts can have far-reaching effects beyond our immediate environment. The plan includes strategies to "reach" out to potential members, "engage" them promptly, and "adapt" strategies as necessary to maintain their involvement and interest.
Dave reflected on the history of the Arlington club, which originated from sponsorship by the Everett club and evolved from the Marysville North County into the Arlington address we know today. He emphasized that districts experiencing growth are not just adding members to existing clubs but are also reaching new communities by forming new clubs.
Throughout his engagement, Dave has served in numerous capacities, from Club Secretary and President in the late '70s to hosting exchange students and managing club communications. He noted the challenges faced during transitions such as integrating women into the club and banning smoking, which initially led to a loss of some members but ultimately helped the club to adapt and grow stronger.
Dave's personal story included humorous anecdotes about choosing Rotary over other service clubs like the Lions, a decision that even brought him some grief from his father-in-law. Yet, this choice allowed him to pave his own path and make a notable impact across his five decades with Rotary, affecting not just local communities but contributing to global initiatives like Polio Plus.
The meeting closed with a reminder about the upcoming District Conference from May 2nd through the 4th, an event that promises to further inspire and galvanize our efforts in Rotary. Dave's dedication and service are a testament to the enduring power of Rotary's commitment to community and international service.
