During our recent meeting, District Governor David Lukov shared his profound insights into Rotary and the qualities that make a great leader. He's a licensed funeral director at Kern Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, but his journey encompasses much more. David's professional background includes roles as a pastor, a Hospice Bereavement Coordinator, a chaplain, and a college instructor.
David is a graduate of Shorecrest High School, Whitworth University, and Princeton Theological Seminary. He's been a dedicated Rotarian since 1998, during which he's been part of several Rotary clubs due to his work-related moves. Currently a member of the Mount Vernon Rotary Club, he served as President in 2017-2018. In addition to his Rotary commitments, David also contributes as the incoming Chair of the Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce.
David highlighted the declining trend of charitable and volunteer clubs and explained that he initially sought Rotary's leadership opportunities. He emphasized the three qualities essential for leadership: training, life experiences, and vision. Rotary, he explained, provides the platform to grow as a leader. His message revolved around leading with compassion and a kind heart while holding a strong vision. He underlined Rotary's role in nurturing leaders who can make a difference.
One of the challenges David touched upon is the prevalent self-centered outlook today. He believes that Rotary can help broaden our perspective, encouraging us to look beyond our immediate surroundings. Rotary's "Service above self" motto holds the power to transcend narcissism, creating a more connected world.
David emphasized that Rotary is like family, a network of people who genuinely care for each other. He highlighted the hope that Rotary brings and invited everyone to join the district conference. Ultimately, he concluded that Rotary's value in our world today is immeasurable.
