Global Impact through Local Action: YES Program's Journey to Guatemala- Ahayla Knight
This week, we were privileged to hear from our very own, Ahayla Knight, discussing the impactful experience in "Youth Engaged in Service" (YES). The YES program, now recognized as a District 5050 youth initiative, encompasses youth, community, and international service avenues, aligning with Rotary's mission of "Doing Good in the World."
Ahayla elaborated on the various goals of the YES program which involves developing leadership skills, engaging in local service projects, and participating in international humanitarian efforts. Each participant commits to 80 hours of local volunteer service annually, focusing particularly on one location to build strong, reliable volunteer relationships. Ahayla spent most of her local volunteer hours helping kindergarten students learn how to read.
The YES program has seen numerous successful projects, from constructing pig barns in Guatemala to installing Aler stoves in remote villages to reduce respiratory illnesses caused by traditional cooking methods. These stoves have dramatically decreased wood consumption, which aligns with environmental conservation efforts and helps mitigate the severe deforestation issues that contribute to mudslides.
This year's team, including Ahayla, recently returned from Barillas, Guatemala, where they continued this impactful work. They installed 75 stoves, improving living conditions and health outcomes for many families. Beyond the practical work, the team engaged deeply with the local community through a carnival, offering joy and recreational activities to village children. Ahayla shared that this trip was not only a profound personal growth experience but also solidified her desire to continue contributing to global communities.
The meeting closed with Ahayla encouraging more involvement in the YES program, highlighting the transformative effect it has on both the beneficiaries and the volunteers. She expressed a heartfelt wish to return to Guatemala, reflecting the deep connections and commitment fostered through these international service projects.
Our club is proud of the achievements of our young volunteers and remains committed to supporting the YES program as it continues to make a significant impact both locally and abroad.
