Blood Drive and Staff Cabin Framing

Our club has had a couple of continuing projects that have been very successful.

Blood Drives

On Friday, February 18, our club sponsored our 7th quarterly blood drive in partnership with the American Red Cross.  Starting with our first drive on July 24, 2020, 244 units of blood have been donated, which the Red Cross reports may have saved 732 lives.

Donors at each drive have ranged from 29 to a high of 38, for an average of just over 34.  Our club provides the location, arranges for volunteers to work the sign-in desk, and publicizes the event.  It was an idea that started with a challenge by PDG Carol, and an Area J blood drive spearheaded by the Rotary Club of Marysville.  Since our club started our quarterly drives, the Rotary Club of Stanwood has also had drives and the Rotary Club of Lake Stevens is in the process of organizing drives.

Staff Cabins

Our Club has had regular service projects at the Fire Mountain Scout Camp east of Big Lake in Skagit County.  It is owned by the Mount Baker Council, BSA, which serves the 5 northwest Washington Counties. It is celebrating its 50 year anniversary this year.

Over the years, we have been great contributors to the camp.  In some cases it has been the donation of funds, e.g. buying equipment for row boats and canoes.  For the most part, however, it has been hands on projects that have included building shelters at the swim beach and at the gun range.  We have built shelters to house campers at two sites, Enumclaw and War Eagle, and most recently, we have helped fund and build cabins in the staff area.

On February 19, we had a framing crew working on the 7th cabin for which we have had involvement.  This one was to be a joint project with the Marysville Club, which ended up with Marysville buying material for our club to build.  The cost of material for each cabin runs between $10,000 and $12,000.  There are photos albums with multiple photos of both the framing in the fall and the most recent work project.  Here is a photo of the February 19 framing crew:
