Glacier Peak Institute: Resilence in the Next Generation through the Outdoors

Bio: Oak Rankin grew up on the upper North Fork of the Stillaguamish. He has taught wilderness survival in Oregon, installed seismometers in Argentina, Peru, Bolivia and Wyoming, been a Fulbright teacher in Brazil, raft guide in the canyons of Utah, logger and most recently founded Glacier Peak Institute with the Darrington community to build a healthy future.  

 

Presentation: Resilience in the Next Generation through the Outdoors. 

Description: Over the last 20 years, poverty in the rural mountain communities has increased by 50%, special needs have tripled and the schools have been cut by 1/3. Furthermore, the youth are not getting outdoors, which has shown to build resilience in rural populations. Rankin will present on the outdoor Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics programming developed by Glacier Peak Institute to engage youth to investigate the issues surrounding forests and empowering them to act.
