Stephen Corcoran  Royal Canadian Marine SAR

Steve Corcoran was in speaking about the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue (RCMSAR). The BC division has its’ headquarters in Sooke. They have 41 stations along the BC coast. Last year they had 711 tasks, 78,767 hours spent and 538 people assisted. They have approximately 1,000 volunteers in BC and to be declared “on call” you need to be within 15 minutes of a station driving at posted speed limits.  Their guide to explain cold water rescue is—1-10-1—which means 1 minute to catch your breath, 10 minutes till you start to lose limb control and 1 hour you will be hypothermic.  FYI, Air and tidal water emergencies are controlled by Federal teams. Ground and inland water emergencies are handled Provincially.

They are a registered charity—get annual grants, corporate donations, Province of BC gaming grants, etc.. Cleone asked Steve how our Rotary can help them and he explained a new program they’ve started called “Kid’s Don’t Float” to promote the importance of using life jackets especially for kids (see 1-10-1 above).  Last year they created the first kid’s life jacket rental stand at a beach in Vancouver with small vests available for renting for the day, safety information etc.—info to make the day trips safer for everyone. The first station is a wood frame structure with jackets by size available. Steve indicated our Rotary role could possibly be around managing these stations on weekends. Our grant committee will report after receiving their request.

REMINDER AGAIN WE ARE AT EAGLE RIDGE MANOR FOR BREAKFAST WEDNESDAY JUNE 6TH AT 7:00 AM!!
