What is Rotary and who is South Bay Sunrise Rotary. Rotary is a worldwide organization of business and professional leaders that provides humanitarian service, encourages high ethical standards in all vocations, and helps build goodwill and peace in the world. Approximately 1.2 million Rotarians belong to more than 32,000 clubs in more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Rotarians are business and professional leaders who take an active role in their communities while greatly enriching their personal and professional lives. A Rotary club contains a diverse group of professional leaders from the community that the club serves. Membership in a Rotary club offers a number of benefits, including:  Effecting change within the community.  Developing leadership skills.  Gaining an understanding of - and having an impact on - international humanitarian issues.  Developing relationships with community and business leaders. Through Rotary's service programs, a Rotary club can have a significant effect on the quality of life in its community. Programs of The Rotary Foundation offer opportunities to form international partnerships that help people in need worldwide. More than 1.2 million Rotarians make significant contributions to the quality of life at home and around the globe. Rotary membership provides the opportunity to:  Become connected to your community.  Work with others in addressing community needs.  Interact with other professionals in your community; assist with RI's international humanitarian service efforts.  Establish contacts with an international network of professionals.  Develop leadership skills.  Involve family in promoting service efforts. Rotary club membership carries with it certain responsibilities.  Members are expected to attend weekly programs of the club. Opportunities to make up attendance include attending the regular meeting of another Rotary club, attending various other Rotary meetings, or attending a club service project authorized by the club board of directors.  Members are required to pay annual dues to their clubs, their districts, and to Rotary International.  Members are expected to participate in local or international activities or projects of the Rotary club.  Clubs encourage members to aspire to leadership or committee roles within their clubs. The goal for a club's membership is an up-to-date and progressive representation of the community's business, vocational, and professional interests. An important distinction between Rotary and other organizations is that membership in Rotary is by invitation. Rotary clubs invite individuals to join and become members. Membership is vital to a Rotary club's operations and community service activities. A primary goal of the club is to continually expand the club with committed members who have the interest and ability to get involved in service and humanitarian projects. Prospective members must:  hold - or be retired from - a professional, proprietary, executive, or managerial position;  have the capacity to meet the club's weekly attendance or community project participation requirements;  live or work within the locality of the club or the surrounding area. Become more than a member of your Rotary club, become a Rotarian. Get involved in your club, your community and your world through the opportunities offered by your Rotary club and Rotary International. Long-time Rotarians agree that involvement is the key. Volunteer to serve on a committee that meets your interests, as a greeter for weekly meetings, and as part of a service project team. These activities will help you get to know your fellow club members and understand what Rotary does. Your district also offers opportunities for you to get involved. Attend your district's conference to learn more about Rotary and celebrate the good works of your district. Host the visiting Group Study Exchange team or help organize your district's Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program to see what clubs working together can do. These activities will help you meet Rotarians outside of your club, widening your circle of friends and expanding your service potential. Rotary International can help you get involved on a global level. Attend RI's annual convention to meet with Rotarians from around the world and get ideas for club activities and service projects. Join a Rotary Fellowship to network with Rotarians who share your vocation or interest. Rotary transcends national boarders. By participating in international activities, you are part of a global network of professionals seeking world peace and understanding. The South Bay Sunrise Rotary Club - Chartered 1987 Considered in the Small Club category but with a BIG BITE.  This Club Co-Sponsors the South Bay Classic Golf Tournament - The thrust of the Classic is to raise funds for at-risk youth in each of the South Bay School Districts. Well over $100,000 has been contributed yearly, over the last 18 years, to prevent Drug and Alcohol abuse in our youth.  This Club has adopted one of the Associations for Retarded Citizens (ARC) group homes where we have built fences, painted and remodeled kitchens. In 2008 the club is remodeling a bathroom in this facility. The club is also actively involved in helping the ARC in many other ways through fund raising and local events.  This Club actively supports the Boys and Girls Club of the Harbor Gateway by adopting low income families during the holiday season.  This Club rings the Salvation Army bell during the Holidays to raise funds for the less fortunate.  This Club is involved in a joint International Project with the Guymas Rotary Club in Guaymas, Mexico, to improve a Woodshop/classroom in Secondario #59 Middle School. We provided the financial support to remodel, paint, and upgrade the electrical system, plus we supplied 7 pallets of donated power equipment and tools to equip the woodshop/classroom. This local middle school is in one of the poorest areas of Guaymas, Mexico, and the project was completed in February of 2007.  This Clubs International Project for 2008 was a Joint Project with the Rotary Club of Guaymas, Mexico, to providing an Air Conditioning system for the Library at the Secondario #59 Middle School. This school has becoming an ongoing International Project for this Club because of the desperate needs of these school children.  This Club has co-sponsored an International Project providing medical equipment and supplies and a water well project to the city of San Quintin, Mexico.  This Club is involved in a Joint International Project with the Rotary Club of San Jose, Costa Rica. This project is supplying tools and equipment for a Drug Rehabilitation Center Woodshop in San Jose, Costa Rica. This woodshop is part of the rehabilitation process, teaching clients skills in the woodworking trade so they can be gainfully employed after they complete the rehabilitation program.  This Club in involved in another International project with Tecate, Mexico. This is called the "Christmas Train to Tecate, in which we deliver donated Christmas gifts to the children of Tecate, Mexico.  This Club also sponsors a "Youth Act Club" in the Torrance, Madrona Middle School, 6th, 7th and 8th grade.  This Club is sponsoring an "Interact Club" in Torrance High School, grades 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th.  This Club is also involved in itself, we like each other. We have lots of club fellowship and co-club fellowship events. Our meetings, although early, are very fast pace with all members taking an active role.  South Bay Rotary Club is a very fun club that get's it done. These are a few of the projects South Bay Sunrise Rotary is involved and YOU could make a difference.
