Julia introduced our speaker, head football coach David Young of Peninsula High. David is a San Pedro native, living currently in San Pedro with his wife and two kids. He played football for Mary Star and then Washington State. David has taught at the PVPUSD for over 20 years, many at PV High and the past 4 years at Pen High. He loves working with young athletes to bring them up to their full potential. He teaches a hard work ethic, personal responsibility, and sportsmanship. He also stresses giving back to the community and doing other charitable work as a team.
He took over the Pen High football team when the team was defunct, four years ago. He had 32 boys at that time, and now has well over a 100 participating. This year there were enough players to field three levels of teams: freshman, junior and varsity. Many schools are unable to field all three levels.
Several of his graduates have gone on to play college ball, and he really helps them to get placed in colleges, as he has many friends who are coaches in different colleges. He also teaches physical education, sports medicine, and nutrition classes at Pen.
One a side note, David Rowe mentioned that his daughters texted him (during the meeting) on how much they loved Coach Young when they had him as a teacher…and actually had a crush on him. David Rowe then commented that his wife also texted him that even the wives has crushes on him! (Too much information, Dave.)
I was happy to be at this luncheon, as Coach Young is a very good speaker, very interesting and entertaining.
Raffle winners were Henry Lee and Christine Barnicki! Julia ended the program with another fine blonde joke!
