In Case You Missed Us... February 15, 2019

By: Jack Goldberg

Our meeting on Friday February 15 was at the Interpretive Center instead of the Golf Club, as renovation has started at the Club. (Can’t wait to see the improvements!) Mark jumped into the meeting with the Pledge (I think someone had a flag video on their cell phone), and lunch. Lunch was Tuna or Turkey sandwiches from Mamma Terano's, which were excellent. After lunch, no Club song today (boo), and right to business. Greg asked us to please acknowledge any Clubrunner emails, so that he can see if we are all getting them.  He feels that maybe half of us do not receive them. So, if there is an event, instead of just responding yes if you can attend, please also respond no, so he can then see who is not getting the emails. They come from name@Clubrunner.email. Guests were introduced: Forgive my spelling, Eric Strum, Don Duperin, Nada, Paster Kenny (prospective new member), Joe Coke Interpretive Center docent. Birthday kids Les Fishman, Kjell Hellberg, Jackie Ignon, John Schuricht, and Liz Fitzgerald. Jonathan mentioned the March Santa Anita event, to see who else may be interested, it will be a lot of fun, please attend, still time! Tour docent’s Joyce & Joe split us into 2 groups, and we toured the facility.  The explanations of the whale migration were fascinating, and we were told March is a crossover month, with some whales going north and some south. Some of us held whale bones, and fins.
The patio outside the entrance actually shows the west coast of the US and Canada and Mexico, and whale migration. I think we all really enjoyed this event.

Thanks Kathleen!!!!

PVP ROTARY IN OUR COMMUNITY!
The Flower Project

On Friday, February 15th, The Palos Verdes Peninsula club Rotarians were in action making a difference delivering St. Valentine’s Day cheer to local Senior citizens in the community.
This is the 2nd year organizing and implementing this third event that was created and spearheaded by our very own former fellow Rotarian, Allan Johnson, aka “AJ”.  The genesis of the project came after a conversation with his friend Mitch about what happens to all of the leftover flowers sold on Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day  that would otherwise be going to waste. So AJ got inspired and through Mitch’s help, got in contact with the local Sam’s Club store in Torrance and asked one of their store managers, Beatrice Agramo if she was able and willing to donate any leftover flowers to this worthwhile project which she agreed to and the rest is history.
This year, flowers were delivered to deserving seniors at three retirement facilities in Torrance and Redondo Beach.  The day started early in the morning with AJ and his helper, fellow Rotarian member Jim Hartman filling AJ’s car with 53 dozen bouquets, then back to AJ’s house where he and his lovely wife Patti helped organize and prepare the flowers for delivery to the designated locations.
The first stop was at the Seasons Senior Apartment complex in Redondo Beach where Rotary member Juliet DeMoss’s mother, Shinping lives.  AJ and fellow Rotarians Lynne Neuman and Phyllis Pelazarre were there filling the large table with the donated flowers. The festivities began with the residents gathered in the main clubhouse enjoying coffee and delicious pastries. The event was made extra special with entertainment provided by Juliet at the piano and her friend Brenda singing soprano for the crowd.  Afterwards, all those in attendance were given a beautiful bouquet to take home.
Next stop was at the home of AJ’s father-in-law, Ray. It is a small residential home in Torrance owned by Family Connect Care, specializing in assisting residents with memory care needs. Joining us was Alyssa Titus, a former member of our Rotary club who wanted to get involved and help with this project.  Ray and the other residents were so happy to see us and absolutely loved the flowers.  From there, we headed off to the last home, which was also a part of Family Connect Care, where we delivered flowers to three of the residents whom were also very happy to receive the flowers.
The event was a smashing success and a big thank you to AJ for organizing and pulling it all together and for Sam’s Club’s generous donation.
LOMITA SHERIFF STATION KITCHEN PROJECT

The Lomita Sheriff Station Kitchen Project was underway on Friday, February 22 with the help of Lynch Electric installing the new appliances! This project is a joint effort between PVP Rotary and Lomita Kiwanis. More details to come as we will have a hands-on work day, and a joint club lunch to dedicate the  new kitchen – a nice gift to our first responders.
