Meet Rotary's Champions of Peace

November’s Rotary Day at the United Nations, in Geneva, Switzerland, will focus on one of Rotary’s top humanitarian priorities: peace and conflict resolution. Six honorees, including four Rotary members and two alumni of Rotary Peace Centers, will be recognized for their commitment to and work on behalf of peace projects in their communities. Their diversity reflects the varied ways that Rotary members address underlying causes of conflict.

Organs for reuse in transplantations in China

Last Friday's Program—In Case You Missed It

Presented by Dr. Wen Chen

Dr. Chen was born in China and moved to the US in 1994. She earned her Phd at Cal Tech.

Dr. Chen spoke to us about the Chinese government’s methods of keeping information from the Chinese people and the harsh treatment of those practicing Falun Gong. Chen said that practitioners of Falun Gong, “a traditional mind and body practice,” have been persecuted by the Chinese government because the wildly popular belief involves “independent thinking.” Chen explained that these practitioners are taken prisoner, placed in labor camps the government call “legal educational centers,” and are tortured, then killed through organ harvesting, a surgical procedure to remove their organs for reuse in transplantations. It is estimated that China’s annual transplant number have been 60,000-100,000 since 2000, resulting in a total of over 1 million transplants. These costly transplants, often in the $100,000 range, make for a booming industry, though many statistics are kept confidential by the Chinese government. The largest consumer for these Chinese transplants come from the US.

The numbers of total transplants versus how many organs are donated or taken from death row inmates do not add up.
To put it in perspective, in the United States the average wait time for an organ match in the circumstance of needing a transplant is about 2 to 3 years, in China, it is only 1 to 4 weeks. In fake phone calls to hospitals, this study found that doctors told people in need of organ transplant that they could be matched with one within 24 hours, one doctor even stating that they “hand-pick them.”  Method of payment, cash.
