Books, Bookstores, and Young Readers
Aug. 02, 2022
My topic will be Books and the state of bookstores in general, but also how to spur young people (and everyone) into reading as a lifetime of education endeavor.
Living in Pacific Palisades for 30 years now, I worked as a Manager at both Village Books and Crown Books. I have also worked at the Palisades Post and the Palisades News selling advertising. Between these different pursuits, I feel I know a bit about our town, the local business community, and especially the local book buying community. And a lot of people !
I took over Collections Antiques in December 2021, after Martha Strang retired. She had a successful antique store for over 30 years. I had worked with her part-time and had the thought of combining the antique and clock store with books. This is how Collections Antiques...And Books ! came about. It has been a very successful merging of complimentary ambiances, and the store has filled and continued to be refined on a daily basis. Over six months now, and going very well. |

Aug. 09, 2022
Dr. Justin Raanan is a Beverly Hills native having been born and raised in our beautiful city. He attended the University of California, Los Angeles for his undergraduate degree. He studied Anthropology Biological Science and graduated Magna Cum Laude Latin Honors with a Bachelor of Science. Early on, Dr. Raanan had a passion for dentistry. He gained acceptance to the University of Southern California School of Dentistry. Through much studying, hard work, and a drive to succeed, he graduated with honors. Next, Dr. Raanan had the opportunity to specialize in the field of Periodontology. In this phase of his education and training, he attended the prestigious Harvard School of Dental Medicine wherein he received a Master of Medical Sciences (MMSc) in Oral Biology.
As a Beverly Hills Dentist, Dr. Justin Raanan is exceptionally trained in Periodontics and Dental Implants. The field of Periodontology as a whole specializes in the treatment and prevention of gum disease. Dr. Raanan is passionate about this specialized field of dentistry because so many suffer from it and are unaware of it. For these reasons and many more, he is dedicated to educating, preventing, diagnosing, and treating patients young and old suffering from the effects of Periodontal disease. At the very core of his dental practice, Dr. Raanan’s goal is to provide you with patient-centric care. Your health and safety are his top priority. He possesses the aesthetic surgical wisdom to work with the most paradoxical of dental challenges. Dr. Raanan’s commitment is to provide you with personalized, attentive medical care. By combining these traits, Dr. Raanan will help you achieve and maintain the optimal oral health you deserve. Dr. Raanan has researched the consequences of poor oral health and its effect on one’s overall health. Specifically, periodontitis is associated with an increased risk of developing heart disease. Patients with chronic gum disease have increased thickness in the blood vessels of their neck. In other words, numerous research has shown that the bacteria that causes gum disease is a leading factor in strokes and heart attacks. Dr. Raanan knows that oral health overlaps with your medical health. This belief has put him at the forefront of preventive dentistry. He is passionate about helping to save lives through innovative, cutting-edge, personalized dental treatments. Dr. Raanan says, “A healthy mouth leads to a healthy heart." In Dr. Justin Raanan’s community, he believes in making a difference with the charitable organization, Homeless Not Toothless. Through this organization, they give homeless people back their smile. Dr. Raanan also spends his free time helping children in less affluent socio-economic areas of the city of Los Angeles. These children receive free dental care through the Giving a Smile Foundation. Dr. Justin Raanan is passionate not only about dentistry but about people.
Dr. Justin Raanan and Dr. Rodney Raanan established the Giving a Smile Foundation to help the children in our community and globally maintain excellent oral health. With the proper education and top-notch dentalcare, the underprivilege youth of Los Angeles now have the tools they need to achieve a lifetime of healthy, beautiful teeth. This has wide-reaching effects that improve a child’s life on almost every level. |

In 2010, he led the first Floating Doctors mission to Haiti and has been continuing ever since. Dr. LaBrot is also the President of RemoteCare Education, providing training for clinicians planning to practice international medical relief, and a professor of Global Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, a clinical professor at University of California, Irvine Medical School, and an FDA compliance advisor for Roche Pharmaceuticals. |

District Governor's Club Visit
Nov. 01, 2022
Born in Chicago, the oldest of six children, Olivia learned leadership, management, organization, accountability, and responsibility while growing up in Los Angeles, California. She attended Pepperdine University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in math and psychology and a Masters degree in Administration and Management of Schools. She taught high school algebra and geometry before serving as a school administrator with LAUSD, a manager in the auto industry and as the Executive Director of a nonprofit agency in the real estate industry. She has been working in the real estate industry for 20 years, now specializing in the commercial sector. Olivia always strived for leadership roles as her way to be of service. As President of the Rotary Club of Inglewood, she developed interest in the business of Rotary and grew active on the district level. Attending the District’s Humanitarian Trips, she saw first-hand her Foundation donations at work across the borders. It is her belief that if we are sincere about the work we do as Rotarians through Rotary, the Rotary Foundation should be the first charity on our list for giving. The greatest gift given to Olivia, by Rotary, is her beloved husband. What a joy to have a life partner who shares her Rotary values and experiences. Olivia and her husband work and play with the most unlikely folks from communities all over the world, developing friendships and partnerships, while helping those in need. Olivia served on the board of directors of Music Mends Minds and as an ambassador for the Rose Bowl Parade. |

Pacific Palisades: Past, Present and Future
Nov. 15, 2022
Bill Bruns and his wife Pam moved to Pacific Palisades in 1972, when he was working for LIFE magazine. Alas, the magazine folded as a weekly publication just two months after they moved into their house, so Bill spent the next 20 years working as a freelance magazine writer, book author and bureau chief of TV Guide's Hollywood office (for three years). Fortuitously, he was hired as Editor of the Palisadian-Post in 1993, a job he enjoyed and appreciated for 20 years. In "retirement," he has stayed involved in the community by serving on the Friends of the Palisades Library board, the PÅPA parade committee, the Historical Society board and the new Palisades Forestry Committee. He and Pam also love spending time with their daughter's family in Westchester and their son's family in Seattle. |
