The Amorok Society
An excellent presentation by Mr. G. E. M. Monro on the Amorok Society and the work they are doing in Bangladesh.  "We teach very poor mothers how to read and write in their local language, we teach them English (necessary for economic advancement) and teach them math and social studies. We also teach them life skills such as health, nutrition, child care and conflict resolution.  The mothers, many of whom have never before even held a pencil, attend school every day for 2 hours. Teachers, recruited from nearby neighbourhoods and trained by AS, use accelerated learning methods (using songs, drama, games).  Neighbourhood houses (rooms) are used as schools. The mothers are then trained to become teachers of their own and their neighbours’ children, developing some of the learning materials themselves for use with the children.  The small schoolrooms, when not being used for mothers’ classes, are used by the women to discuss issues of importance, as determined by them, and as a place for cottage industry work to increase family income.  Working from the centre of the family out using accelerated learning methods (songs, pictures, drama) is a highly effective approach. Mothers come to understand and value education – learn how to create a positive learning environment for children, and they come to make better decisions in many areas for the family. Mothers report that they can now make better sense of their world and have become more highly-valued within their own homes and in the community."

About to enter his 30th season as the Los Angeles Laker's athletic trainer, Gary  Vitti is widely recognized as one of the best practitioners of his respective field.

Vitti , who monitors the health of the club throughout the season using state-of-the-art methods in conditioning, dieting, stretching and testing, is the longest tenured athletic trainer in Lakers history with 29 years of service.

The native of Stamford, Connecticut is responsible for the care, prevention and treatment of injuries to Lakers players, assuring the coaching staff that each athlete is in the best possible condition from October through April, May, or, in the event of a championship run, June. Yet just because the season ends doesn't mean Vitti is off the clock. His job typically continues throughout the months of July, August and September as he spends a portion of his summer working with players during the off-season.

This group worked very hard and four hours later we had 20,000 meals ready for shipment.  A big thanks to Interact Students, Rotaract men and women and of course the men and women of our Rotary Club.

Here is the meals we assembled and packed for distribution.

Our 1st Ever Stop Hunger Now Event happened Saturday, March 29th!   We began with a brief orientation to the day from our "Stop Hunger Now" liaison Brandon Romero. We each then staffed a station, working as a team until we had packed 20,000 meals for children overseas.  This is a worldwide project, and Rotary is their biggest international partner. We should take pride in the fact that we are strengthening the international impact of Rotary by participating in this event, and we are truly making a difference. I am already proud of what the day accomplished.

The Renaissance of Traditional Chinese Culture

Image

President Kathleen presenting 100 Polio Vaccinations Certificate given in Dr. Ye's Honor.

Our speaker today was Dr. Michael Ye.  He discussed the renaissance of traditional Chinese culture.  As more Chinese realize the importance of their traditional values, they have been working together to bring about a renaissance of the traditional culture. Shen Yun (meaning “The beauty of divine beings dancing”) is a manifestation of such “renaissance.” Shen Yun Performing Arts brings to life the deep inner meaning of man’s awakening to the Tao.

Shen Yun Performing Arts is a nonprofit organization. Established in New York in 2006, its mission is to revive China’s 5,000 years of civilization and bridge the gap between East and West. Through the universal language of music and dance, Shen Yun weaves a wondrous tapestry of heavenly realms, ancient legends, and modern heroic tales, taking you on a journey through 5,000 years of Chinese culture. Its stunning beauty and tremendous energy leave audiences uplifted and inspired. A Shen Yun performance features the world’s foremost classically trained dancers, a unique orchestra blending East and West, and dazzling animated backdrops — together creating one spectacular performance.

The Two Bit Circus

Image

Rotarian Les Silverman, Brent Bushnell from Two Bit Circus and President Kathleen.

Another fantastic program. The carnival reimagined with robots, fire, and lasers to inspire young inventors in science, technology, engineering, art, and math. (STEAM)  "You've heard of STEM... but we agree with John Maeda of RISD and MIT that Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math aren't complete without Art.  Our culture isn't doing enough to get kids interested in STEAM. As professional inventors, we rely on these disciplines every day, and want to share our excitement about them with kids young and old. Through years of building and demonstrating fun games we've learned no better way to get kids into STEAM than to show them an amazing time.  When you say 'engineering' to most kids they zone out.  But when you say 'lasers, robots, and fire,' you have their undivided attention."  A great event coming to Los Angeles in April.

Franky Carrillo was our Speaker this Morning.

Our speaker today had a real "Thanksgiving" story to tell.

At the age of 16, Francisco "Franky" Carrillo was convicted of the 1991 shooting murder of a Lynwood man. His conviction was reversed by the Los Angeles County Superior Court  on March 14, 2011 after he had served twenty years in prison.

His conviction relied on eyewitness testimony from six people. The witnesses later admitted they had been influenced by police officers, and each other, to identify Carrillo. Two men later confessed to the crime, and stated Carrillo was not involved.

Although always protesting his innocence, Carrillo was found guilty at his initial trial and subsequent appeals. After Carrillo's case was taken on by the Northern California Innocence Project, he was able to conclusively prove his innocence.

One of Our 462 Loans Thru Kiva
StoryThumbnail

This is one of 462 Kiva loans that the club has participated. We still have zero defaults. It's interesting to look at loan in the US. The typical default rate is 10%.

A loan of $1,200 helped Greydi Isamar Amador Galagarza to pay for tutoring and to register her research paper.

21-year-old Greydi is single and studying her fifth year of a law degree at UCA. She is requesting her second loan to register her research paper which she will defend in order to obtain her degree. This entails a fair amount of time and money as she must buy educational materials and pay a tutor who will help her with her paper. In addition, she is carrying out an internship in the prison system which is outside of the city. She travels there three times a week. Greydi's biggest dream is to be able to finish her degree and help people who need her services.

We listened to the artistry of two MBMS musicians (flute and violin) and two Mira Costa musicians (violin and cello) perform extraordinary (and extraordinarily difficult) solo pieces for our large assemblage, bolstered by a room full of proud parents. Our performers were the first place winners of our club-sponsored music competition, representing four categories: MBMS Band, MBMS Strings, Mira Costa Grades 9- 10, and Mira Costa Grades 11-12. Also present were more awardees: the second and third place finishers in each category.
