At our penultimate meeting of this Rotary year we struggled to get the laptop hooked up for a power point presentation, and then for setting up the zoom connection. Finally one of our guests, Micheal, was able to get things connected, and then Andrea was able to show her slides and Bob was able to join us. Attending tonight were Allan, Wayne, Brendan, John, Rudy, Nora, Stephen and Bob, along with Andrea Woo, Micheal Bolu and Gao Yalim. Anthony sent his regrets.
Following our usual opening (later than usual due to our technical difficulties) and singing of O Canada, we introduced and welcomed our three guests.
Rotary and Other Announcements:
An executive meeting will follow our regular meeting, as it was postponed from last week.
The Mega Draw 50/50 Sales team from our club this weekend includes Brendan and Allan at the Fort Langley Farmers Market from 9-12, and Rudy from 1-3 on Saturday. On Sunday Wayne and Brendan will work the 10-12:30 shift at Ralph’s Market. We need more volunteers for the upcoming long weekend.
Members are encouraged to volunteer for Ribfest, August 18-20.
Possible August dates for our summer barbecue will be circulated soon.
Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation
Andrea Woo, Donor Advisor for Major Gifts, then addressed the club, speaking about the Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation. Established in 1985, the Foundation has raised millions of dollars for LMH and health services in Langley. LMH opened in 1948 with 35 beds and now has 468 beds, including 200 long term beds. One program they are proud of is WIT (Whatever It Takes) which checks on at-risk patients and provides meals for two weeks after they are discharged. A newer program is Foundry, set up to help youth, and one which our club supported financially.
Andrea says that the LMH Foundation funds excellence, adding to the equipment and service that would normally be provided. Thanks to some major donors, $2 million was raised last year. Current needs at the hospital are four cardiac beds to add to the six which are full all the time. These will cost about $15 000 each when all the gadgets and gizmos are included. At Foundry the need is for psychiatric and professional counselling services. Volunteers visit each week to cook and 24 youth come in regularly for meals. Happy and sad dollars for Polio Plus were pledged for: a phone message saying there had been a cancellation so his medical appointment was moved up; great weather for a granddaughter’s trip to the waterslides; Andrea’s presentation; LMH Foundation “Tea” this afternoon; the presentation and summer arriving; enjoying an office barbecue despite the freezing weather; getting Rotary prices for the steaks; selling 50/50 tickets with other dedicated Rotarians; Canada reaching a population of 40 million; Canadian technology finding the remains of the Titan; the Langley Field Naturalists 50th year anniversary; wishing the effort to protect refugees would equal the effort to find the Titan; and more for the evening’s presentation.
We toasted Canada and adjourned another enjoyable meeting. Next week we’re back at the Rotary Interpretive Centre for the installation of our new executive. Incoming DG David Lukov and AG Bev Dornan will be special guests, and PH Recognition pins will (finally) be distributed to deserving members. Sadly, zoom will not be available.
