Tonight Merle, Nora, Wayne, Rudy, Brendan, Allan, John and Stephen met at the Timms Centre with Lana joining us via zoom. Regrets were received from Byron and Anthony. Conversations included the Foundation Dinner coming up on the 16th and milking salmon.
Stephen called the meeting to order, welcoming us the the Rotary Club of Langley and giving a brief description of our club. We sang O Canada which prompted comments of “Very good’ and “Beautiful harmony.” We recognized Remembrance Day, noting that some of the older generation would remember it as Armistace Day, and we all wore poppies. Stephen welcomed Lana via zoom and Wayne introduced Merle as a guest for likely the last time (well, maybe once more). We are still waiting to hear if there is wifi in the Rotary Interpretive Centre, as without it we won’t be able to have a hybrid meeting next week.
Stephen shared the results of the Council on Legislation, reading out which resolutions passed or were defeated, with additional commentary from Wayne, who participated on our district committee formulating our responses. Stephen has the information should any member wish a copy.
More Rotary Updates...
Continuing with our discussion of Rotary business, Wayne advised that he will be hearing an update on our district grant at the Foundation Dinner. The Willowbrook Charity Night event will be a joint venture with the Rotary Club of Langley Central’s Winefest this year on November 19th. Beneficiaries of proceeds will be Langley Big Brothers Big Sisters and the Rotary Club of Langley Central.
Stephen has been asked to send in information about our President-Elect who will need to attend pre-PETS training. We don’t have one. After a short discussion, Rudy was asked if he would take on the position and he kindly accepted. Now we have one.
Allan will be laying a wreath at the Afghan broken tree monument on Remembrance Day, and he recounted his experience there the last time the service was held. Geoff Clay will be taking his father Les out for lunch at the White Spot on Nov. 27 and then to the Vancouver Giants game at LEC. Rotarians are invited to join them – please let Geoff know if you will be able to do so.
Allan was asked if he and Joan would again host our club’s Christmas dinner and he will check for us. We need to find a date that the caterer will be available. We also discussed proxy votes for when an executive member is unable to attend executive meetings, with no clear resolution found.
Other updates
As we were now past eight o’clock, we moved on to happy and sad dollars, with seven people contributing this week. Money was pledged for: being away for three weeks, having to go to a pharmacy for medication while on vacation (a hassle) including a 35 minute walk back to their hotel, and being caught at the tail end of a hurricane in New Orleans; finding an unexpected deal on a gaming chair (now it just has to be put together!); being happy; a courageous Russian woman and for BC having the best government in Canada (which led to another’s opinion that that was not true); Rudy stepping up to take on the President-Elect position; Rudy, Stephen and Allan; and for someone who wanted assistance but for whom no academic reference could be found.
We closed as usual with a toast to Canada and wished each other a good evening. Next week we meet at the Rotary Interpretive Centre, as there is no word on WiFi, no Zoom will be available. Remember: the $100 US donations ($136 CA) to TRF are due this month and your credit cards will be charged accordingly unless you advise Wayne or Anthony of a different form of payment.
