We gathered at Timms Centre for our regular meeting. This week we had Rudy, Anthony, Wayne, Leon, Merle, Nora, Stephen, John and Manjit present, with Allan and Lana participating on zoom. Our special guests were Karen Zukas, Executive Director, and Dave Quinn, Artistic Director, for the Fort Langley Jazz and Art Festival. We also welcomed Andy Schildhorn and Petrina Arnason, here to hear our guest speakers.
Following the call to order and O Canada (“Good singing”), Stephen encouraged Rudy to report on his PETS experience. As expected, he fully enjoyed it, and mentioned the message from incoming RI President Gordon McInally, a great believer that everything starts with hope. His (our) theme next year will be “Create Hope in the World.” Rudy also enjoyed the presentation from Mrs. Canada (who knew we had a Mrs. Canada?) who has traveled around the world encouraging peace and hope.
Wayne reported that as we have not received any applications or expressions of interest for YAIL from local students we have reached out to the district to let them know that we will sponsor a student that they may have on the waiting list. There is a good chance that a student from Surrey will be one we sponsor this year. Rudy delivered our cheque for the Youth Arts Festival (we are not able to present cheques to the individual winners) and Langley Lodge has given us a request to help with funding the replacement of their commercial dishwashers. One is well past its life expectancy, and the others are approaching their best before dates.
Fort Langley Jazz & Arts Festival
Rudy then introduced David and Karen, and she spoke to us while showing a slide presentation. Odlum Brown is the title sponsor this year and they would like Rotary to become a sponsor as well. She spoke about the festival’s history and the plans for this July 20 - 22. Jazz musicians and ten blues bands will be playing and they anticipate 20 000 people attending the event. The performers are all paid, and the festival receives funding form both federal and provincial governments, as well as private sponsors. We moved on to happy and sad dollars and funds for Polio Plus were pledged for: celebrating Evgeni’s birthday (Ukrainian refugee and friend); granddaughter’s 6th birthday; this evening’s presentation; missing meetings; seeing old faces; nine days of rain and wind up to 65 mph in Hawaii; and Allan’s wine cellar running dry.
