What a glorious night for Rotary in Langley. Initially club members were concerned last week when we were reminded that we could not have access to Timms on May 4th (this was in our contract; we were just forgetful). Where would we meet? Well, the stars aligned, and May 4 was the date for the SASSY Awards. In the past individual members had to miss our club meeting to attend the event, but this year we could all go and fully enjoy the evening at Chief Sepass Theatre in Fort Langley (as mentioned in the previous RoteNotes).
SASSY (Service Above Self Student Youth) awards were presented in seven categories: Culture & Diversity Leadership, presented by the Rotary Club of Langley Sunrise; Environmental Leadership Award presented by the Rotary Club of Langley; Community Service Award presented by Odlum Brown; Leadership Beyond Adversity presented by Langley School District Foundation; Youth Leadership Award presented by the Rotary Club of Aldergrove; Sports Leadership Award presented by JD Farms; and Arts & Culture Leadership Award presented by the Rotary Club of Langley Central.
All award finalists receive $500, with the final winner receiving $1000 and a trophy. All finalists along with a sponsor posed for photos on a stage in the lobby, and more photos were taken when the actual trophy was presented inside the main theatre. I have not yet received copies of the official photos, so accompanying these Notes are some of the photos I took during the presentations. I had the privilege of presenting the award for our club, but as I was on stage, I was not at my seat to take a photo.
Other updates
Next week we will be back at Timms, and hope to have Senator Gerry St. Germain as our guest speaker to talk about the Langley Foundation. We will also have three of our scholarship winners speaking to us, so it should be a very enjoyable evening for us.
