Tonight Wayne, Rudy, John, Bob, Leon, Victoria, Yvonne, Nora, Gertrude, Merle , Micheal and Anthony were joined by guests Wayne Crossen and Pat McCutcheon. Humblest apologies were given by President Rudy who discovered the missing key hiding under the seat of his car. The mystery has been solved!
Promptly at 7:05 the meeting was called to order with the usual opening. We sang well and were reminded that this year we are encouraged to create hope in the world.
Rudy announced that our club has donated $500 to the Langley Volunteer Bureau to support the Cards for Seniors program and $5400 to Nicomekl Elementary School for their autism program, thereby enabling parents to access autism assessments. Note that starting on January 25 and continuing until March 14 our meeting times at Timms will begin half an hour later than usual. The meetings at RIC will continue to be at 7 p.m. World Help Network will be loading a container bound for the Philippines at 9 a.m. on November 25th. Wayne Crossen offered to drive any volunteers for this event. The Aldergrove club’s pasta fundraiser was successful, and Charlie Fox was in fine form (pun intended) plying dollars from donors for their Starfish Backpack program. The Rotary Club of Langley Central Satellite club members will be collecting warm clothing to give away and donations are appreciated. Giving Tuesday is approaching, on November 28. We may be involved in a possible food bank project at Wal Mart in mid-December. The LRCCF AGM will be held on Tuesday, December 12 at 6 p.m. at Ricky’s in Walnut Grove. Wayne, Rudy and Micheal have been selected as our club’s official representatives, but any interested members are welcome to attend. Our own club’s AGM will be held on December 7th. Remember to inform Nora if you will be attending our Christmas Pot Luck social on December 21 at RIC. Wayne and Rudy presented the cheque for $10 000 for the Langley Care Society to Aly Devji , CEO at Langley Lodge. We hope a photo of the presentation will appear in the local newspaper.
Guest Speaker - Pat McCutcheon
Our speaker this evening was Pat McCutcheon, an independent mechanical engineer professional who shared his passion and research about climate change and the environment. He feels the world has drifted over to a me society instead of a we society, and supports the Green Party as a genuine alternative to the major political parties. He notes that the Greens are not a one-trick pony (sounds like the name of a country group) and have a wide variety of initiatives in their platform. The Green Party is rooted in science and evidence, and it tries to stay clear of opinion and ideology. Pat feels that we don’t seem to be pivoting to a sustainable energy economy in our province. We are in a generational transition period and he suggests we should not keep investing in a sunset industry (fossil fuels). Geothermal energy is a future growth industry. He advised us not to buy into the doom and gloom, as we are transitioning and there are solutions to the reliance on fossil fuels. We need to reduce our carbon emissions to help the environment. Canada is a higher cost producer of fossil fuels, so if the demand and then the price drop, we won’t be able to compete with Russia and the middle east countries. On another topic which he couldn’t fully explore due to time constraints, he stated that our health care system needs a major overhaul. Pat may return to a future meeting to expand on this topic. John advises that ginger has been found to be beneficial for autoimmune diseases, and getting your hearing checked (and using hearing aids if required) helps reduce Alzheimers and dementia.

Happy and Sad Dollarswere donated for finding the missing key; having a good time at the Low Entropy fundraiser (Wayne, Merle, Rudy, Micheal and Emerald); attending a great graduation ceremony; Rudy stepping in as guest speaker at the grad program; the fundraising efforts at the Aldergrove pasta fundraiser; donating all his office equipment, including the throne which was a special chair for Wayne to use; and having On the Trail published by the Langley Field Naturalists, a three year project now completed.
