Another week, another surprise. Wayne stepped forward to chair the meeting as the spot behind the lectern remained vacant at 7 p.m. Wayne, Anthony, Merle, Rudy, Nora, John and Byron were joined by Lana, Bob and Brendan on zoom and the meeting went on. Discussion topics included heritage apple day, our great weather, a fellow on his third or fourth trophy wife, and a trip around South America. You had to be present to hear all the details.
After we sang ‘O Canada’ in our usual fine form, Wayne shared two announcements. The first was a sad and happy one combined. Sadly, Sonia Gill’s husband passed away after battling cancer, but happily she will be continuing on as a member of our club. The second one was that the District 5050 Foundation Dinner will be held at the Clarion Hotel, 36035 North Parallel Road, Abbotsford, BC on Wednesday, November 16th, from 5:30 to 9:00 p.m. The theme will be Peace & Conflict Resolution, and further details will follow.
Funding Request and Event Update
We have received a funding request from LCSS to help cover the costs of getting their back yard into better shape in order to use it again, as it suffered badly during the terrible floods we had. This will go to the executive committee for a decision. Bob mentioned that we might qualify for a grant from Wal-Mart and will seek further information. We had two Rotarians, one perhaps to become a Rotarian, and three students from LSS at our table during the heritage apple festival. It was a beautiful day and the event was very well-organized. We heard about a lady named Lisa making applesauce onsite. We had a couple stories about transparent apples and a tree that blew over but kept producing fruit, with the added benefit that now the apples were within easy reach to pick.
Rotary Moment with Wayne
Wayne shared Rotary information about Rotary’s areas of focus.
WHAT ARE ROTARY’S AREAS OF FOCUS? (1 of 2)
We concentrate our efforts in order to maximize our local and global impact. Our most successful and sustainable projects and activities tend to address these causes, and all humanitarian projects, scholars, and vocational training teams funded by The Rotary Foundation’s global grants work toward specific goals in these areas of focus:
• Peacebuilding and conflict prevention: Rotary encourages conversations to foster understanding within and across cultures. We train adults and young leaders to prevent and mediate conflict and help refugees who have fled dangerous areas.
• Disease prevention and treatment: We educate and equip communities to stop the spread of life-threatening diseases like polio, HIV/AIDS, and malaria. We improve and expand access to low-cost and free health care in developing areas.
• Water, sanitation, and hygiene: We support local solutions to bring clean water, sanitation, and hygiene to more people. We share our expertise and work alongside community leaders and educators to make sure our projects succeed in the long term.
Other updates
Then we joined in singing Happy Birthday to Rudy Storteboom, who is celebrating 68 years breathing on this planet. He happily recorded us giving him our full version of the song. Nora’s birthday is coming up on the 14th, but she stated that we don’t have to sing for her. Apparently she’s already attended one celebration with an impersonator singing Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison songs. Is she saying something about our voices?
Eight members pledged happy or sad dollars for: Wayne taking on the presidential duties; having surgery with 20 cm of colon removed with the cancerous polyp caught in time, feeling better now; that version of Happy Birthday sung with such gusto; Bob’s recovery and our singing; rudy’s birthday and Rekha Shaw’s health improving; VESTA’s lack of cooperation with condo owners; mother being 91 years old; visiting with members of his medical school class, enjoying great meals at Granville Island, and sitting on a boat, catching up.
We closed with a toast to Canada and wished each other a good evening. Hybrid meetings will continue and we welcome more members to attend in person again. Note: Next week we’ll have two guest speakers from the Low Entropy Foundation.
