Another week and another interesting meeting. I look forward to Thursday evenings. This week Wayne, Rudy, Nav, Victoria, Bob, Brendan, Nora, Leon and Anthony were present along with guests Wayne King, Brielle Ball, Janet Ingram Johnson and Nancy Rathgeber. Regrets were received from Allan and Yvonne. Following the land acknowledgement, opening remarks and the singing of O Canada (“Good singing”) Rudy officially welcomed our guests. Nav apologized for leaving the list of birthdays and anniversaries at home.
Rotary Learning (RLI) will now be a one-day session on October 28th at the Rotary Field House in White Rock. The Foundation Dinner will be held November 18, the same day some of us are going to the Low Entropy fundraiser in Port Moody. We have room for more at our table. Pre-PETS will be held on Dec. 3 at the Silver Reef Casino, with PNW PETS again at the Doubletree on February 16-18, 2024. Next April 13 the District Learning Assembly will be held at the Langley campus of Kwantlen Polytechnic University, making it very handy for our members to attend. The Aldergrove Rotary Club is having a pasta party fundraiser at St. Dunstan’s Church on November 17th. Our Christmas Pot Luck will be held on December 21 at RIC, and Rudy is asking for someone to organize the details. Here is an opportunity for you to help the club. As Timms is not available on Dec. 28, we have decided to cancel our meeting that week.
Langley Rotary Clubs Charitable Foundation Update
Our guest speaker, Janet from the Rotary Club of Aldergrove, spoke about the Langley Rotary Clubs Charitable Foundation (LRCCF). She has assumed the presidency of LRCCF, following Brendan Martin in that role. She is looking for a treasurer to look after the finances. Janet served as a newspaper reporter in England and as an editor in Vancouver, and is active with Bard in the Valley. The goal of LRCCF is to do good in Langley and beyond, but they added verbiage in order to qualify as a charitable foundation (rewritten to satisfy government requirements). Ribfest proceeds are funneled through the charity, and this year each of the four clubs will receive $21 347.75 from that event. Attendance was up but donations were down.
Each club is asked to have three delegates to attend LRCCF meetings and our club did not have great attendance last year. Let’s improve this year. Who would like to serve as our representatives? Here is another chance for you to help out your club. The AGM is to be in December, with the date and location to be determined. A basketball Hoop-a-thon is being considered to be held at Langley Events Centre, with the Aldergrove club taking the lead for this four-club event.
Wayne King - Remembrance Day and the Cloverdale Legion
Wayne King, a member of Cloverdale Legion, spoke about Remembrance Day and brought various Remembrance Day materials for us to purchase. Many veterans are hungry, and many suffer from PTSD. This affects the veteran as well as his or her family. Proceeds from the Poppy campaign go to assist these veterans in need.

Rotary is committed to raising US$50 million every year for polio eradication. Through our partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, every $1 of that is matched 2-to-1.
Raising both funds and awareness and mobilizing volunteers are among Rotary’s primary roles as a partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative. With our members, we’ve contributed more than $2.6 billion to fight polio, including matching funds from the Gates Foundation, and Rotary volunteers have dedicated countless hours to protecting children everywhere.
You can take action and raise awareness on World Polio Day, 24 October, and throughout the year.

A man walks into a bar with his dog. He goes up to the bar and exclaims, “For $100 I’ll show you my talking dog.” The patrons at the bar are interested, so they all chip in and collect $100. The bartender holds it for them.
The man asks the dog, “Who was the greatest New York Yankee hitter of all time?” The dog responds, “Roof! Roof!”
The bar patrons all complain. “That’s not a talking dog! He’s just barking. Get out of here! The bartender gives them their money back.
The man leaves the bar with his dog. Out on the sidewalk, the dog turns to him and says, “Should I have said DiMaggio?”

Donations were made for: a granddaughter approved for a school trip to Quebec City; Janet’s wonderful presentation; both speakers; hopefully finished with surgery; Janet, Wayne and happy to see Bob back in person; glad to be back and to see Bob.
We closed with a toast to Canada. Next week we’re again at Timms so should be able to offer a hybrid meeting. Hope to see you there!
