Hybrid meetings... or was it?

Tonight Wayne, Rudy, John, Bob, Nav, Leon, and Anthony were joined by guests Rick Davis, Raoul and Anna Kin Toledo. We gathered, vigil-like, outside the Rotary Interpretive Centre, looking at each other and at the locked door. No parking lot lights shone upon us. No-one had a key to open the building, so we adjourned to the nearby Starbucks for our meeting. There we discovered that they had closed at six o’clock, so we met for awhile on the sidewalk outside their building. The following email message from President Rudy will serve as the main content of this week’s edition of our newsletter.

“Unfortunately we were not able to access the Rotary Interpretive Centre for our regularly scheduled meeting this evening. Please accept my apologies to all who attended, especially Rick Davis-Rotary Club of Langley Central President-Elect and RibFest Organizing Committee Chairperson. Rick delivered a cheque for our club’s proceeds from RibFest 2023 in the amount of $21 347.75.

Also, I offer my apologies to our Special Guest Speaker Anna Kun Toledo-Rotary Club of Manila, Philippines (back office) and her husband Raoul. I know that Anna has some wonderful words of encouragement for us from Rotary Club-Manila as well as from her life experiences. I hope to reschedule with Anna Kun Toledo in the New Year.

As you know Rotarian Allan Richmond is away and Rotarian Micheal Bulo is working long hours on a special project. Rotarian Nora Truman sent me her regrets because she is at a Langley Field Naturalist event. Also, Rotarian Yvonne Hopp advised that she is experiencing flu symptoms after a busy week where the flu bug is going around.

Community Events and Club Updates

Club Business

This week, beside responding to various correspondence, I enjoyed meeting with Rotarian Micheal Bolu. Michael has agreed to help promote our club’s public image. Also, I had a meeting with the Langley Christmas Bureau to finalize details for the Christmas Wish Breakfast event at Newlands Golf and Country Club. Plus, I was privileged to be at a well-attended goodbye dinner for Travis Strain-Rotary Club of Langley Central. Travis was instrumental in planning and delivering logistics for our very successful RibFest events. District 5050 Governor David Lukov and representatives from all four Rotary Clubs of Langley as well as the Satellite Club gave Travis a good send off. Travis is moving to the 100 Mile House area.

Later in the evening, the Langley Rotary Clubs Presidents and I met online with Assistant District Governor Bev Dornan to review Club activities, programs and goals. Yesterday, I went to Rotary Club of Langley-Central’s regular meeting when we heard from special speaker Langley Township Mayor Eric Woodward. Last night, I was honoured to participate in the New Directions English Language School graduation ceremony and celebration. Many thanks to Rotarian Yvonne Hopp for including me, as Rotary Club of Langley representative, for this inspirational commencement event where over 40 countries were represented.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Langley Care Foundation Cheque presentation is expected to take place Friday, November 17 with Rotarian Wayne Wiebe. Please note that the local media is invited and that the City and the Township of Langley are both being challenged to match Rotary Club of Langley’s $10,000.00 grant.

Rotary Club of Aldergrove is hosting a Pasta Party fundraiser at St. Dunstan’s Church in Aldergrove on Friday, November 17 @ 5:30PM. This is a fundraiser for the club’s Starfish Backpack Program. I’m told that tickets are probably Sold Out!

Low Entropy fundraiser: We have four members carpooling to attend a fundraiser dinner and Beatles tribute band on Saturday, November 18 at the Port Moody Recreation Complex. Because the event starts at 6PM I’d like to propose meeting at Timms Community Centre with a carpool leaving @ 5:30PM. Thank you Merle for making ticket arrangements. For those who ordered tickets please square up with Merle before the event.

Our speaker this evening was going to be Anna but due to the unusual circumstances she will reschedule to January. The Rotary Moment with Wayne was postponed to next week, when you’ll be able to hear two Rotary moments. There was no light touch this evening. However, there was one sad dollar donation from Yvonne (for being absent).

Other updates

Plan to attend on November 23^rd when we’ll have our first call for elections of officers for the 2024-2025 Rotary year. If you would like to serve on the executive, or on one of our committees, please contact Wayne. Be present when we discover the solution to the mystery of the missing key.
