Where have all the flowers gone? Well, perhaps they are hiding from the colder than usual weather, a result of global warming (?). Many Rotarians were in hiding tonight also as only a few of us gathered in person and online to socialize and discuss things Rotary and of general interest. Early conversations included changes in background for computer viewing, mute problems, someone “mixed up with my days and what have you,” scam phone calls about the Arrive App , scam phone calls alleging to be from Readers’ Digest saying you’ve won ($2.6 million, $3.5 million, $5 million, plus a Lexus or Tesla), the world being much more complicated for young people, $107 to get a COVID test for travelling by plane, do it yourself testing in the U.S., $40 for a COVID test at Shoppers Drug Mart in Ontario, and attending an American planners Association conference.
Tonight’s O Canada cut off about three-quarters through, but was still sung beautifully at his house, claimed Wayne. With no designated speaker, Leon suggested we have a social night so that is what we did. Leon told us about his new purchase, a 2020 Ford Sequence Class B vehicle, and they have already tested it by sleeping in it and finding it has a good furnace. Leon and Catherine will be going for a trip down the Oregon coast next week, so he’ll be tuning in from the States next week. Allan told about returning from Hawaii to find a dead battery, and he and Joan had to wait an hour for service. Now he’s getting a recharger to have available for any needed jumpstarts. You need a special Maintenance charger for EVs. Wayne’s painting by Anatoli Krasnyansky was admired. The painting was one purchased at an auction while cruising. The field naturalists are planning an event at the arboretum on May 1 to identify different wild species there.

We have received approval for a grant to purchase kitchen cabinets for the RIC, with some conditions. They may make it problematic for us to proceed with the grant. We heard about the potato chip dispute at Superstore, and about Costco moving items to different locations to make it necessary for customers to walk through more aisles to find what they want, and of course, they hope that will result in more impulse purchases. We heard about a fundraiser the Abbotsford-Sumas Club held at Bradner Hall, and Nora buying different coloured daffodils at a fundraiser for Abbotsford Hospital. We heard about cherry blossoms in Steveston, nine scholarship applications, and Wayne reviewed the criteria for the essay and the scoresheet used to evaluate each application. We also talked about cleaning decks and some of the difficulties involved with strata living.
Somehow happy and sad dollars were omitted but one individual donated the customary $2 to the cause.
