Charles Ennis got his first telescope as a child but when he got involved in a law enforcement career working night shift that interfered with that passion. Charles retired as a detective from the Vancouver Police Department in 2005 after 28 years. Charles was awarded the Governor General’s Exemplary Service Medal for his service, which included service in the Emergency Response Team, as a Hostage Negotiator and Child Abuse Investigator, in the Gang Crime Unit, and with the Mental Health Emergency Services Unit. Charles went on to be a civilian dispatcher for VPD (ECOMM for Southwest BC) from 2005 – 2013.

In April 2013 Charles retired from law enforcement, bought a new telescope, and joined the Sunshine Coast Centre of the RASC that August. Within months he became their media director and in December 2014 became President of the SCC. In May 2016 became National Secretary. Charles is the Special Publications Editor of the RASC Publications Committee and is the author of 26 books including the book Building a Small Observatory, which the RASC published in 2016, and the Solar Observer’s Handbook, scheduled to be published by the RASC this spring.
