This Past Tuesday, May 24, 2022

At our last meeting, the Rotary podium made its return! Our podium took a short vacation away and spent some time with our friends at Columbus High School to get restored and looking brand new again. We were joined by Columbus Principal Dr. Ortiz, welding instructors Mr. Ortiz and Mr. Mazariegos, and the team of four students who worked on this project.

Welding instructors Mr. Ortiz and Mr. Mazariegos explained the project was a learning experience for everyone involved. Students learned a new sanding technique, stained the wood, and then added a fresh clear coat. But, this didn't come easy to the students or the instructors. Mr. Ortiz and Mr. Mazariegos explain that they had their fair share of late nights watching Youtube videos to get it done perfectly. Overall, there was plenty of teamwork and hours of hard work put into the podium, and it has definitely paid off - the podium looks great!

To conclude the program, President Jesse presented Dr. Ortiz and the wonderful welding instructors with a $1,000 donation for their department. They are excited to use these funds to purchase new equipment and tools that will directly benefit the students.

CHEF CJ was back at his station today.  He hasn’t missed us when we were meeting elsewhere because he didn’t really know we were gone.  As he explained, sometimes Tuesdays and Wednesdays are his days off, as Wedgewood is busy at Rio Hondo on weekends, catering weddings and big parties.

Today he gave us seven salads, including artichoke hearts, and fruit; meatballs with a rich marinara sauce; and chicken tenders with a choice of ladles full of pesto or Alfredo sauces.

SAVE THE DATE: Friday evening June 24 will be the Demotion Dinner for outgoing president Jesse Vargas.  According to tradition, the incoming president-elect serves up the roast, and that doesn’t mean roast beef.  It’s Jesse who will be roasted, as Pres-elect Mel Sanchez gleefully announced.
Get dressed up and bring the spouse or s.o.  Details tba, so watch this space.

We had a visit from a frequent guest, Nick Anagnostou, from the Bellflower Club.  Nick was born in northern Greece but he’s long been a citizen here.

There being no Fine Master, as Pres Jesse said that John Lacey had refused to do the honors today, Jesse turned the meeting over to Principal Xochitl Ortiz,
Mr. Bryan Mazariegos of the Welding Department, and four of the high school students from Columbus High School.  Subject: THE PODIUM PROJECT.

Our legendary podium, sanded and re-coated, looked bright and ready to go but had a zigzag cut-out across the front.  Missing piece is in the bag.

To much applause, the team brought out the big missing piece and proceeded to fit it in and then secure it: the Rotary Wheel.

The cogs are re-gilded and covered with a sparkly substance encased in a clear polymer resin, good for years of use and display.

Perfect fit.

We put the lectern to its very first use, asking Xochitl, the management teams and all the students to signed the book resting on it.  We will donate the book in all their names to the Downey Library Children’s Room. President Jesse presented a donation to Xochitl– for a wood-working class?
