Instead of meeting at our usual place, we met at the newly remodeled Downey City Library for lunch and a tour from Director Ben Dickow. Ben reminded us that libraries are no longer only for quiet time, but are a space for meeting and collaboration. We had the same loud and lively gathering as usual.

Before heading off on a tour, President Jesse was proud to provide Ben with a donation to the library for $800. Thank you to everyone for continuing to promote early childhood literacy.

The tour included taking a glance inside one of the newest working spaces added to the library called "The Workshop." The workshop is free for anyone with a library card. Inside are items and supplies to create things, such as a large 3D printer. Future engineers will be happy to have this new resource available.

There are still plenty of books and quiet nooks for readers.

Right around the corner is the children's room, with a small platform perfect for storytime, and rows and rows of bookshelves that are perfectly crafted to match the height of its small readers.

Each week, Rotary donated a book to the children's area in honor of our guest speaker of the day. Books are selected with the help of lead children's librarian to pick the best books suitable for today;s young developing minds. Be sure to take a look when the book gets passed around, and thank you for your contribution.

Next Tuesday, May 3, 2022

The meeting will be at CAFE N' STUFF 11255 Woodruff Ave. Downey
(Corner of Firestone & Woodruff)

Join us as we welcome Downey Police Chief Leslie Murray. Lunch begins at noon.

Rotary encourages grown-ups to read to children.  “If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales,” Albert Einstein has been quoted as saying. “If you want them to be more intelligent, read them more fairy tales," Family read-aloud time is fun and promotes better reading skills, even with the littlest ones.

The revamped Downey City Library can now be used as a gathering space and not only a quiet place.  Ben encouraged Rotarians meeting in the Cormack Room to enjoy their usual lively conversations there, along with their box lunches. Then we had a tour of the new layout of the Library.

Little ones will have much improved language skills if they are read aloud to, and if they are engaged with another person during reading time.  They’ll learn to communicate with them about the story, rather than keep their thoughts to themselves.  It’s is a special time they’ll really treasure.  As Dr. Seuss says, “You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child.”

On a personal note, I had to miss the Library meeting.  After Jorge Montero’s warning that he had tested positive to Covid after the April 19 meeting, I too developed a mild malaise and tested positive too.  I self-isolated, and the symptoms soon disappeared.  After five days I was delighted to see that I tested negative.  Thanks for the get well messages from those who knew– until you’re afflicted, you don’t realize how much that helps.

Being vaxed and boostered is what I credit for my quick recovery.  That and my secret sauce, of course.  Looking forward to seeing everyone at the next meeting, at Catering and Stuff on Tuesday.
