Today, Diane Davis told us, marked Interact Week.  In recognition of that, officers of four of the school clubs that Downey Rotary sponsors were our guests for their induction ceremony.

The young people represented Downey High, Warren High and Our Lady of Perpetual Help.  The Youth Act club from OLPH, for younger grade students, was also introduced.   This last group’s members are small but mighty. Our District 5280 sponsors a Youth conference, and a District Social is coming up, as well as District Service Youth Breakfasts.

Our Club always enjoys the local District Arts and Speech contest, where we present checks to the best entries, which are showcased at one of our Club’s weekly programs.  The youth clubs told of their many interesting projects and fund raisers, such as Toys for Tots for Christmas, and a Chinese New Year celebration.

Then, all sixteen of the various clubs’ officers were installed by Past President Diane, as future leaders for the coming year.  We recognized the new President of Warren Interact as Mariah Montero, daughter of our member Jorge, whose proud wife, Maru, was also present.  Mariah told us of activities in which Warren Interact had participated, such as the Pancake Breakfast. They also do a fund-raising cancer drive.

President Paul then praised the school clubs, saying, “This is Downey Rotary at work right here.”  He then presented a check for $500 to each of the 4 clubs, for a total of $2,000, and displayed the red “End Polio Now” T shirts that the clubs are selling in the lobby, to benefit Rotary International’s number one project.  The book for the library was proudly signed by each of the sixteen, and each identified themselves with their titles under their names. Just imagine future readers in the Children’s Room of the Downey Library, holding this token of their legacy in their hands.
