Navigating the Great Loop

Long Beach Rotarian, Steve Shaw and his wife Meredith retired in October 2013 and immediately purchased a boat in Florida to realize their dream of navigating the Great Loop.

Starting up the East Coast from Florida on the Intracostal Waterway; up the Hudson River, west on the Erie Canal to Lake Ontario. Through the Trent Severn Waterway in Canada to the Georgia Bay; Lake Huron; Lake Michigan then down the Illinois, Mississippi and Tombigbee river system in the Central and South US to the Gulf Coast and back to Florida.

Their 15 month trip covered over 7000 miles, passing through over 140 locks and under countless bridges including the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges.

Their adventures proved that the eastern 1/3 of the US is an island; the adventure was the trip of a life time!
