Dr. Charlotte Achieng-Evensen is a Kenyan-American poet, learner, and academic. Professionally, Dr. Evensen has taught in the K-12 system for the since 2002, spending eight of those years as an educator in Papua New Guinea. She has been a Professional Learning Community Lead and was recognized as the Warren High School Teacher of the Year, 2012-13. Currently she serves Downey Unified School District as an English Language Arts Teacher Specialist focusing on curriculum, instruction, and assessment. Dr. Evensen runs AVID, a program in seven sites in DUSD which assists students in need of extra support to achieve their academic potential and later attending college. |

Professor Renator Babalu Sobral, 3rd Degree Black Belt in Jiu Jitsu and Black Belt in Muay Thai, a student under Carlos Gracie Jr. and Marco Ruas, arrived in Cerritos, California in 2006, coming from Rio De Janeiro, Brasil. Before the opening of Babalu's Iron Gyn, he was professionally fighting mixed martial arts and actively contributing to the Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling and Muay Thai environment. |

Downey Cares Collaborative

Victor Manalo is a former councilmember and Mayor of the City of Artesia. He and former Downey Mayor Rick Rodriguez created the Downey Cares Collaborative, a coalition of public, private, nonprofit, and faith-based organizations that provide resources and support to children and families in the foster care system. He is a retired Associate Professor from Cal State LA and continues to teach in the School of Social Work. As a local government consultant, he engages cities to address pedestrian safety. |
