We are honored to have Captain Jarrod DeWitz and the Commanding Officer for Coast Guard Base Los Angeles/Long Beach, Commander Rob Poitinger. They each have long and distinguished service careers with the Coast Guard in many capacities and will provide an overview of the Los Angeles/ Long Beach base, the training academy for this branch of service, and other ways they have served needs for residents in our area.

Dear LA5,
Last week, with the help of Rotarian Herb McGurk, we learned that USA Dance, the non-profit ballroom association, was started to elevate ballroom dancing as a sport into the Olympics (however, only break dancing got in and only for 2024 :( ) and that Herb was motivated to dance by watching Dancing with the Stars! Very interesting….. We had a salsa lesson with professional dancing instructor, Erica Arnold, and no one fell down (even when we twirled around). What fun!!
The LA5 Board of Directors met last week to develop our plan in response to the local wildfire disaster. I’m proud of our sincere concern and contributions, both individually and collectively. We reached out to all members to check in and will be pausing dues/lunches for the rest of this term for the three members who were so deeply impacted. We partnered with Beverly Hills Rotary for an immediate service opportunity and will be supporting our local fire station #10 with equipment and meals through our LA5 Foundation. We want to help share information to all in need and will continue to identify critical volunteer/donation needs. Here is the current guide for LA5 Rotary Wildfire Resources.
