The year 1962..."was a year of many firsts for Club Number Five.  Los Angeles was the host Club for the 53rd Annual Convention of Rotary International.  Attendance totaled 22,302, which was 50 percent larger than any other previous Convention held in the United States!  Past [LA5] President Carl Miller was elected President of Rotary International for 1963-1964, thus becoming the first LA5 member to be so honored bringing great distinction to our Club.  A Sister Club affiliation was established with Nagoya, Japan.  A meeting was held in Nagoya.  Los Angeles Mayor Sam Yorty attended." - History of the Rotary Club of Los Angeles, Eightieth Anniversary Edition

These significant milestones in our Club's history occured exactly 50 years ago.  This Friday, we will kick off the celebration of the 50th anniversary of our sister club affiliation with the Rotary Club of Nagoya, Japan.  As the 104th President of the historic Rotary Club of Los Angeles, I am honored and excited to welcome President Torao Oshima, Mrs. Kyoko Oshima, Secretary Ichiki Mizuno and Mrs. Yumi Mizuno from our sister club the Rotary Club of Nagoya, Japan to join us in celebration of the 50th anniversary of our sister club affiliation. We also hope to send a team of LA5 Rotarians to Nagoya in October to reciprocate.

We will also celeabrate the start of the 72nd annual Nisei Week Japanese Festival with a welcome dinner Friday evening to welcome the Mayor of Nagoya and his delegation.  Lady Miyuki and our Nagoya Sister Club Committee Chairs Roger Reck and Dr. Sumi Kawaratani will join our Nagoya guests at this welcome dinner.  We are also pleased that the President, Secretary and their wives will join Lady Miyuki and me on the first ever LA5 Rotary float in the Nisei Week Parade on Sunday, August 12th.

Please join us this Friday as we welcome our honored guests President Oshima and Secretary Mizuno to our great Club. And we hope to see you and your family for this exciting event at the 72nd Annual Nisei Week parade this Sunday!
