LA5 College Scholarships

On March 3, 2015, LA5 will interview 25 elite graduating high school seniors attending schools in Los Angeles for our LA5 Scholarships.  These students will have survived the rigorous process of being graded on their academics, test scores, commitment to their community and their achievements.  The final hurdle is the face-to-face interview with the Rotarians as scholarship recipients are selected.

These students never fail to impress and, often, we are fortunate to be able to build mentoring relationships with these students that last a lifetime.  Many will be the first to attend college and have overcome tremendous odds.  We invite all of our LA5 members to participate in the interview process.

Each year, the Rotary Club of Los Angeles awards 75 local students close to $200,000 to assist them toward degreed studies.  It is the largest college scholarship program among Los Angeles service clubs. The Close, Coppersmith, Barr, Kirk and Walch families established college scholarships for academically talented inner city graduating high school seniors.  Additionally, the LA5 Rotary Foundation has established the Randal Simmons Memorial Scholarship to honor LAPD’s SWAT Officer Randal Simmons, who was shot and killed in the line of duty in 2008.  This memorial scholarship is in his honor for a student pursuing a degree in law or law enforcement or a similar field.  The LA5 Rotary Foundation recognizes past LA5 Presidents through the Past Presidents’ College and Technical Education Scholarships.

All scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement, financial need, community and school service and personal qualities and strengths.  A committee of LA5 members makes the final selection.  Each college scholarship will be renewed only if the recipient meets the grade point average requirement and remains enrolled as a full-time student with a minimum of 12 units per semester for the upcoming academic year.

Close , Coppersmith, Barr, Kirk and Walch Family Scholarships

Starting in 1994, Richard T. Close, a former Vice President and Director of Smart and Final Corporation, and his wife established this Close Family Scholarship fund with Rotary Club of Los Angeles to assist academically talented students within the downtown Los Angeles area, specifically targeting talented inner-city high school students. Since that time, the Coppersmith, Barr, Kirk, and Walch families have donated additional funding to increase the Rotary Club Foundation Scholarship Endowment.
