International Committee Update

Jeff Weigel retired from a Vice President's position at a Standard and Poor's 500 company to form an executive level group working with European technology companies on North American business issues. He has spoken to groups around the world about business challenges crossing cultural bounds. In 2016 Jeff closed down the Road Warrior Group to invest his time on personal travel, spending time with Karen, enjoying life and heading up our club’s efforts on international projects. This is Jeff’s third and final year as our International Committee Chairman. In addition to Jeff our International Committee is made up of the following Rotary members: D P Agrawal, Terry Bichlmeier, Nora Giralt, Vera Jimenez, Bill Paul and Rick Wendorff Together they are going to talk about what they are up to this year. |

Karen joined the Redondo Beach Rotary in 2005 and has been its Treasurer, International Chair, Vocational Chair and in ’13-’14 President. This year she is helping Bill Paul with membership. In 2013 she recruited Jeff, her husband to join the club. Jeff is in his third year as the club’s International Chair. Both Jeff and Karen are now retired, Karen from thirty-nine years with Morley Construction where for many years she was the Controller and Jeff from forty-three years in technology sales and marketing – taking a start up from first sale to Standard and Poor’s 500 and later consulting with European technology companies on entering North American markets. During our lunch meeting on September 25 Jeff and Karen are going to facilitate a club workshop on finding and keeping new members. Both club members and guests are invited to participate. |

Alfredo Rolando Andrade attended Phillips University, in Enid, Oklahoma, to fulfill his desire of entering the Christian ministry. He received a Baccalaureate and a Master’s degree there and went on to serve churches in South Central Kansas. In 1967, he left the ministry and returned to school, this time to the University of Oklahoma where he earned a Masters and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Latin American history. He graduated in 1975 and went to work at the University as Director of Chicano Studies. In 1977, Rolando accepted a position as Assistant Professor in Ethnic Studies at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. He taught there for 31 years and in 2008 retired as Professor Emeritus. At that time his son, Kevin, asked him to move to California and live with him, which he did. Rolando joined the Bowling Green Rotary Club in 1993 and served as President in 2001-2002. He joined the Redondo Beach Rotary Club in 2008 and served as President in 2015-2016. |

Eli Gauna transferred his membership to the Redondo Beach Rotary Club several years ago from the Greater Van Nuys Rotary Club. He served as District 5260 District Governor 1991-92 (many years before the 2 districts merged). Born in New Mexico, he moved with his family to the San Fernando Valley when he was very young. Eli earned his B.A. from UCLA in international relations, to law school at Southwestern University earning his J.D. in 1968 - starting his own law office in the San Fernando Valley, and was the first Spanish speaking attorney in the Valley at that time. Besides being District Governor, the highlights of his Rotary career were representing the R.I. president to Cabo San Lucas, Merida MX and Santa Fe; also leading the GSE team in March 2010 to Nepal. |

Global Health - Lessons from All the Wrong Places: Contagions, Conflicts, and Cluster Meetings

Dr. Donaldson has worked around the globe, frequently in areas of conflict and disaster, and has been the lead architect of national emergency care plans in several countries. He is board certified in emergency medicine, emergency medical services, and clinical informatics, and serves as the Director of the Emergency Medicine Global Health Program at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and as Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Epidemiology in the UCLA Schools of Medicine and Public Health. Dr. Donaldson is also the critically acclaimed author of The Lassa Ward, a memoir about international humanitarian work, and Founder and Editor-in-Chief of WikEM, the world’s largest emergency medicine open-access reference resource. Dr. Donaldson has been the principal investigator on approximately $20 million dollars’ worth of grants and is a recipient of the Humanitarian Award from the California chapter of American College of Emergency Physicians.

Dr. Lewis received his PhD in Biophysics and MD from Stanford University. He is a Professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Dr. Lewis is a member of the National Academy of Medicine (formerly the Institute of Medicine), a Past President of the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine, currently a member of the Board of Directors for the Society for Clinical Trials, and the Senior Medical Scientist at Berry Consultants, LLC, a group that specializes in adaptive clinical trials. Dr. Lewis has served as a grant reviewer for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Cancer Institute of France, the National Institutes of Health, the Patient Centered Outcomes Research Institute and other foundations. He has also served as a member of the Medicare Evidence Development & Coverage Advisory Committee of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. He has authored over 240 original research publications, reviews, editorials, and chapters. Pertinent to his presentation, Dr Lewis is team doctor for Chadwick School in Palos Verdes and directs their concussion management program.

South Bay Galleria Redevelopment Project Update

Geoff Maleman is a consultant with Forest City, the owner of the Galleria. He has worked on some of Southern California’s most controversial projects, working collaboratively to bring developers and communities together to create projects that benefit everyone. He is the past-president of the Rotary Club of Westchester and the 2017-2018 Senior Assistant Governor for Rotary Image for District 5280. He lives in Redondo Beach with his wife and three children. |

First Saturday of every month we are invited to have up to six people help in serving food or distributing clothes to homeless people in LA. This is to assist the Outreach organization which is made up of several churches in south LA. George will usually offer a ride to and from the location, just give him notice of your intentions. Eli and Alice have already expressed interest in the January 6th date but they can still handle two more of us. |

Cherise Charleswell joined Journey Out in September 2016 as Development & Outreach Director. Cherise has a multidisciplinary education, having undergraduate degrees in the Biological Sciences and Anthropology, as well as a Master’s in Public Health. She is the Immediate Past President of the Southern California Public Health Association (SCPHA), the Co-Chair of the Programs Committee of the American Public Health Association’s (APHA) Women’s Caucus, and has held various leadership position within APHA. Her research, work, and advocacy has traditionally focused on health inequity, women, racial/ethnic minorities; and how social determinants of health in the built environment impacts their health outcomes, quality of life, and life expectancy. Operating since 1980, Journey Out is a non-governmental and non-profit health and human services agency. Our mission is "to help victims of commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking leave a life of abuse and violence, overcome their fears, and empower them to reach their full potential and achieve their goals". |

He is a former Police Commissioner in the City of Inglewood, a Past-President of the Rotary Club of Inglewood and Past-District 5280 Sergeant At Arms (under 4 Governor's). He is also a former member of The Jamaica Cycling Team and was the New Bicycle Racing Association Track Champion in 1972 and 1973. Wayne will tell Security Stories that will demonstrate some of the life skills Rotary gave him, speak about international travel security, and provide a handout checklist of travel does and dont's. |

Dr Timothy Horeczko received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Comparative Literature from U.C. Berkley (he speaks Spanish, French, Italian, German, Russian and Ukrainian) before attending medical school at U.C. Davis. He then performed a residency in Emergency Medicine and a fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and has a Master of Science in Clinical Research degree from UCLA. Timothy is now a faculty member in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Harbor-UCLA and an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He has received several teaching awards, performs clinical research aimed at improving emergency medical care for children, and has a popular podcast that shares recent advances in pediatric emergency care with emergency physicians in the U.S. and around the world. Timothy will share lessons he has learned -- not as a physician, but as a dedicated family member just trying to help navigate what can be an overwhelming, monolithic health care system. |

With a BA from UCLA in Economics, he spent over 11 years teaching Economics, Personal Finance and Math in Los Angeles public schools. Where, he learned a few things about keeping an audience engaged. (If you can keep the focus of 40 7th graders, you can teach anyone…) When he’s not funding mortgages or teaching, he loves to meditate, volunteer, travel and torture his kids with his “life lessons.”

Surviving as a Pirate Hostage

Michael Scott Moore is a journalist and a novelist, author of a comic novel set in a fictional California surf town, Too Much of Nothing, as well as a travel book about surfing, Sweetness and Blood, which was named a best book of 2010 by The Economist and Popmatters. He covered the 2011 trial of ten Somali pirates in Europe for Spiegel Online, then traveled to Somalia in early 2012 to research a book. He was kidnapped and held hostage for two and a half years. He grew up in Redondo Beach and graduated from Mira Costa High School. His memoir about Somalia is due out from HarperCollins in mid-2018. He’s covered the European migration crisis for Businessweek, and politics, travel, and literature for The Atlantic, Der Spiegel, The New Republic, Pacific Standard, The New York Times, The L.A. Times, The Daily Beast, and The L.A. Review of Books. He has received fellowships or grants from Fulbright, The Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, and the Carey Institute for the Global Good. Michael will talk about what it took to survive as a pirate hostage, centered on classical Stoicism. |

Mike Peterson grew up in coastal Florida and California where he developed a fascination for the ocean world at an early age. He graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara with an emphasis in Marine Biology before going to medical school at UC San Diego and then performing a residency in Emergency Medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Mike is now Vice Chair for Clinical Operations for the Department of Emergency Medicine at Harbor and a Professor of Emergency Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Mike has been a scuba diver and sailor for many years, and can often be found on his boat ChriSea. One of his areas of expertise is injuries encountered in the marine environment. |

Jim Mellert was born in Honolulu while his father was a Navy dentist stationed at the submarine base at Pearl Harbor. He grew up in the South Bay Area of LA enjoying body surfing and fishing at the Redondo Beach Pier and Redondo Barge. He graduated from Rolling Hills High School where he played on the tennis team for 4 years. He graduated magna cum laude with distinction from Point Loma College with a B.A. in Biology. He then attended the USC School of Dentistry where he graduated with honors in pediatric dentistry and received the Gold Foil Operator’s Award. In 1982 he opened his dental practice in Torrance and this year celebrated his 35th year. His practice emphasis is cosmetic reconstructive dentistry including periodontal surgery and dental implants. Jim feels a sense of accomplishment when he is able to help a patient reduce their dental anxiety. He was awarded the Mastership from the Academy of General Dentistry and Fellowship in the Pierre Fauchard Academy. Jim is a third generation dentist and his daughter, Jamie, is a fourth generation dentist. All four Mellert dentists are graduates of USC. Jim is married to his wife Kathy and they have a blended family of six children. He plays tennis every weekday morning. He was a member of Torrance Rotary from 1986-2002. |

Project ECHO provides an invigorating environment for high school students to learn about entrepreneurship through a year-long program that combines business fundamentals, mentoring, college field trips and activity-based learning.As Project ECHO’s Executive Director, Diane Quast is responsible for the overall management and administration of this emerging non-profit organization. Her focus has been on developing the internal capacity of the organization to allow for future strategic growth. Diane’s long tenure in the non-profit community brings expertise in fund raising, board & volunteer management, strategic planning and working with program staff to develop impactful programs. She has over 20 years of nonprofit leadership experience supporting local Los Angeles youth and education initiatives.Diane previously worked for Options – A Child Care and Human Services Agency , the L.A. County Sheriff’s Youth Foundation, Child and Family Guidance Clinic, CSU Dominguez Hills and the Los Angeles chapter of the American Red Cross. Diane earned her Master’s Degree in Public Administration with an emphasis in Nonprofit Management from California State University and her B.A. in Journalism from the American University in Washington, D.C. She became an entrepreneur in 2005 when she started a publishing company to self-publish her books which currently sell on her website along with popular book stores. Diane joined ECHO in 2013.

Connie Sullivan graduated from UCLA in 1981 and soon after joined Los Angeles County in the Division of Health, Safety and Disability Benefits. She began as an epidemiology analyst and eventually rose to become the division chief. Eventually she transferred to the Chief Executive Office as manager of the Section of Data Integration, Evaluation Services and Urban Research. Dr. Sullivan retired from Los Angeles County's Chief Executive Office in 2008. Since leaving the County she volunteered for the Los Angeles County District Attorney for five years and the Palos Verdes Estates CARES program for two years. She currently is active with the Citizens Climate Lobby and South Bay 350.org. In 2017 Supervisor Janice Hahn appointed her to the Los Angeles County Citizens Economy and Efficiency Commission. Dr. Sullivan received her Bachelor's Degree in Microbiology from Purdue University and a Doctor of Public Health Degree in Epidemiology from UCLA. |

Centered Living: Transforming Conflict with Compassionate Communication

Michelle Charfen is an Emergency Medicine Physician at Providence Little Company of Mary Hospital in Torrance, CA. She is the founder of Centered Parenting and facilitates workshops for parents, educators and groups interested in strengthening their communication skills and fostering well-being. Participants in today's mini-workshop will be introduced to the theory of Nonviolent Communication as a tool to foster both compassion for oneself and others while navigating challenging situations. Michelle has a BA in Human Biology from Stanford University; an MD from Harvard Medical School; and a Masters of Science in Epidemiology from the School of Public Health at UCLA. She received her training in Emergency Medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and lives with her husband Christian Horvath and three children in Redondo Beach, CA. RB Rotary Collaboration with Peary Middle School

Mr. Henry Washington is a Military Veteran who spent over 6 years in the Navy. He has been affiliated with Title One, Peary Middle School as a volunteer gardening instructor since 2004. In the beginning Mr. Eddie Goodman, 3 Marines and Mr. Washington ran a boot camp for troubled youth in the garden until the district halted the program. PCI Kenneth Jones introduced Henry to Redondo Beach Rotary and since that time our club has written 3 Community grants to benefit the middle-school aged youth who work in the garden under Henry’s supervision. When Henry speaks to the students he addresses them with respect and they listen. Henry credits Mrs Board, who is now retired, with the leadership and passion for the garden which has allowed the Peary Middle School Peace Garden students and Redondo Beach Rotary to establish such a strong partnership. |
