PRESIDENTS REPORT.  Our own Joe Longo had his brother Frank come down from Stanford to speak at our Club on Monday regarding Emerging Strategies for Preventing and Treating Alzheimer’s Disease.  His presentation was enlightening regarding all the breakthroughs that are being done at his lab.  We need to make sure we get out and exercise more to keep not only our bodies, but also our minds in shape.

And how about Adrienne Weise with little Lara Davies!  I loved that we heard firsthand from a student of the Beverly Hills Academic Afterschool Tutoring Program describe the benefits she received from having a tutor.  A number of our members currently participate in the tutoring program.  If you are interested in volunteering, please contact adriennetutor@gmail.com or 310-285-6810.

LUNCH FEE/ATTENDANCE.  Beginning this Monday, our lunch will cost $40 per members.  Also, Attending meetings is one of the basic obligations a member accepts upon joining Rotary.  Let’s see our numbers increase.  Absence of any member deprives the Club of the value of its membership, the contributions to ongoing Club projects, and the personal fellowship of each member.

PROGRAM FOR AUGUST 5, 2013. Our speaker this Monday, August 5 is Los Angeles County Sheriff Leroy “Lee” Baca.  Sheriff Baca was born in East Los Angeles. Sheriff Baca joined the Sheriff’s Department in 1965, and rose through the ranks to the position of chief.  In 1998, he was elected Sheriff of the County of Los Angeles.  Sheriff Baca has expanded the Sheriff’s Department from 14,000 to 18,000 employees through progressive, constitutionally based values; innovation, creativity and public trust programs.  These 18,000 sworn and professional staff provide law enforcement services throughout Los Angeles County to forty-two incorporated cities, 140 unincorporated communities, nine community colleges, and thousands of Metropolitan Transit Authority and Rapid Rail Transit District daily commuters.   He founded the LASD University program to improve the college education of his employees.  Sheriff Baca also founded the first Education-Based Incarceration Program in the nation, which ensures a path to re-entry for all inmates.
