Hello Anchorage East folks.

I’d like to invite you to stop by the West Interact Club or the East Interact Club someday.  West meets Tuesday at 10:20a, and East meets Wednesday at 10:20a.

Anchorage East sponsors these clubs.  West started their year August 28, and John Ruhlin is the faculty adviser.  They had an ice cream social the first meeting, and the second meeting they put together boxes to collect plastic around the school to take to the central collection area.  Today they continued talking about plans for the year, and, on the spot, started a mini food drive to help stock up the closet of another teacher who keeps extra food on hand for hungry students.  They are thinking about an international project, perhaps related to interrupting human trafficking, learning more about the adoption process in Ethiopia, or reviving a “Global Lunch” tradition of gathering students together to discuss international issues.  They are also looking at a community project, such as a drive to get clothing for students whose family budgets do not allow much for this category, or helping at the ice cream social at the local Pioneer Home.

East started its year last week, and Travis Cooper is the faculty adviser.  Our exchange student Adam Szabo and about 10 students showed up.  They are also making plans for this year.  In the past they have done Random Pies of Kindness (buying pies in bulk and then charging a $10 donation to deliver a pie to the destination of the donor’s choice).  They have also created “plarn” from plastic grocery bags that they weave into mattresses for use by disadvantaged people.

Being present at the meetings helps put more of a “Rotary” face on their activities, and we can also help them think about what they might want to do.
