Guest Speaker - State Representative Tom Cochran
 
Rep. Tom Cochran, President Narda Murphy & Jim Conroy
  • Tom is the State Legislator for the 67th District
    • He is in his 3rd and final 2 year term
  • Tom was 29 years in the Lansing Fire Department
    • He lives in Mason with his wife Kathleen
    • They have two grown sons
    • Just celebrated their 30th Anniversary
  • He will be out of office on January 1, 2019
    • He stated that he is a moderate Democrat
  • He talked about a recent bill to do away with all personal Income Tax in Michigan
    • He voted against it along with 12 Republicans & all Democrats
    • It would cause a $1 billion hole in the budget
    • It would have created huge problems for schools and infrastructure
  • In the Lansing area, Tom has 67th District, Andy Schor has the 68th & Sam Singh has the 69th
  • He is now, in his final term, on the Appropriations Committee
    • It is a joint committee with the senate and the house
    • To get appropriations for a university, 50% of the funds have to come from the University
  • Term limits:
    • There are 43 brand new reps coming in due to term limits
    • It slows everything down due to their learning curve
      • Lots to learn
  • Charitable gaming bill
    • Senator Rick Jones sponsored
      • Passed out of committee
      • Tom is confident it will pass
    • Still will be some tough requirements
  • Shut down Line 5?
    • Tom supports this
    • Line 5 is the pipe line from Canada that runs through the UP and under the Straits of Mackinac and down Michigan carrying crude oil
    • The worst environment disaster was in Michigan by Embridge - the Kalamazoo River spill
    • It is a 60 year old pipe
    • Concern that a leak in Lake Michigan would be horrific
  • Pollinators - bees and butterflies
    • Concern about the loss of them
    • Needed to pollinate so many of the fruit and plants that Michigan produces
  • Death with dignity - controversial topic
    • 18,000 medical calls per year
      • As a paramedic saw too many of them
    • In cases where person ahs 6 months or less to live
      • Determined by 2 physicians
    • They can make a request to get medicine to terminate their life
      • Then have a 15 day waiting period - to check to be sure they are sane and making the decision carefully
    • Then they have to make a second request
    • The physician prescribes the drugs and the person self administers
    • Death listed as ‘Terminal Illness’ - to satisfy insurance
    • Tom thinks it is about having a choice
  • Legalize marijuana?
    • He supports medical marijuana
      • But it concern need more rules about dispensaries
      • Does help some people with pain
    • Recreational use - not so sure
      • Probably will happen though
  • Run for Senate after term limited?
    • No - won’t run against Curtis Hertel
  • He is concerned we are disinvested in Infrastructure and Public Schools
