  • Raj announced that it was to be a working meeting - no guest speaker

  • Poker:
    • Reno’s has pulled out of Charity Poker (reason not known)
    • ACES is trying to find another venue to have it
      • Option 1 - wait and see what they can find in Lansing area
      • Option 2 - go to Waterford
        • A show of hands showed that 6 were willing to go to Waterford
        • Also willing to do a double shift
      • Option 3 - hope that ACES finds a venue by early January & schedule more in winter/spring to make up some of lost revenue
    • John expressed concern that we have ‘honorary’ only members doing Poker
      • He was uncomfortable with them helping - even if met letter of law
  • Polio:
    • Will have a low key event at the Sun Theater
    • October 22, Sunday at 2 pm - free will donation
      • World Polio Day is October 24th
    • Show the movie “Five Pennies”
      • 1950s movie - pre-Polio vaccine
      • Shows what happens when people get polio
    • After show will go to the Pub & Grill upstairs and discuss it
      • Will have a taco bar
    • Currently only 10 cases of Polio in world - all in Afghanistan/Pakistan
      • Vaccinations supported by Rotary, Gates Foundation & World Health Organization
      • Need to completely wipe out
      • Lesson with malaria - was nearly wiped out, but came back
    • Each Rotary club (5 area clubs sponsoring) will contribute $200
      • Donations will be accepted at the door
      • District will match donations & Gates Foundation will double match
    • WKAR will show Rotary Polio films that week as well
    • Talk it up to your friends/neighbors & get people to come
  • Grants:
    • Raj explained the new process for analyzing grant requests
    • The board is evaluating them with the following criteria:
      • Is it sustainable - or will it be ongoing?
      • Meet Rotary’s 6 goals?
      • Number of people affected?
      • Are club members involved?
      • Matching grant possibility?
      • Is it local?
    • Question: have we decided on a long term project?
      • Two have been proposed in the grants
        • Welcome sign on road from I96
        • Digital sign at four corners - for community calendar
      • Will discuss these as part of our Foundation board
      • We have approved moving some money to the Foundation for long term projects
    • In future, Nick will give a brief summary of the board meeting at Club Assembly
  • Taste of Williamston:
    • Raj thanked all who put so much effort into the Taste to make it successful:
      • Including Jack, Janet & George, Narda, Jim, Norm, Paul, Brian & others
    • Paul has talked to D&G about next year
      • Thinking about getting them a plaque too
    • Raj noted the recycle effort made - only ONE trash bag of garbage was used
      • With over 300 people eating
      • Also recycle facts on all the tables
    • Preliminary net gain from the Taste is $11-12,000
      • Have to pay sales tax this year cutting into the profit
      • A portion of the net will go to Many Hands also
    • Raj then handed out a sheet for each table to fill in to evaluate the Taste
      • Gene will send a copy via email
      • Will be available next week as well
  • Norm noted that Williamston Red Cedar Garden Club is selling wreathes
    • See Norm or Fred for order blanks
  • Norm also noted that the Museum is having a bus tour on Sunday, Oct. 15th at 1 pm
    • Covers the Apple Industry in Michigan
    • 4 hour tour for $25
    • Guided - will see orchards, storage facilities, …
  • Howard Dahlstrom’s memorial service will be October 20 at 11 am at St. Mary’s in Williamston
    • Anyone with photos of Howard, please send to Earl
    • Putting together a slide show
  • Earl noted that Howard helped a blind man, Russell Watkins, for 25 years
    • Howard was his Power of Attorney
    • He is now being moved to an assisted care facility
    • Need a trailer to move some of his things - Fred volunteered to help
