All about the bees business
Rebekah Jones gave us all the buzz.
The Rotary membership was entranced with Rebekah's lively discussion about bees and she was swarmed with questions. Rebekah obviously loves sharing all the amazing things about honeybees. Her interest in bees began when her younger brother Caleb received a scholarship beehive from the Williamson County Area Beekeepers Association. Since then her interest in bees has greatly increased, and she has gone on to keep her own beehives and to serve as a spokesperson for the beekeeping industry as the Williamson County Honey Queen and the Texas Honey Princess.
She explained about the worker, queen and drone honeybees and their functions and lifecycles. Her presentation was presented in a lively way, packed with information. We learned such things as that bees only pollinate one type of flower at a time, that they meticulously dehydrate the nectar from the flower to about 18% water content prior to injecting it into the cell in the hive, and one bee in a lifetime will only produce 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey.
Rebekah's program was one of the best in a long time, so thanks to Rotarian Jeff Watts for bringing her to us.
