Public Registration ROTARY LUNCH: Martha Ryan, Health Worker Training
Martha Ryan will tell us about the Community Health Worker Training Program, an intensive, 14-month paid job training program that prepares women for meaningful employment in career fields that provide a path to financial security. Up to eight women can attend at a time; most trainees are former clients of the Homeless Prenatal Program, which Martha introduced us to when she spoke last year.
These trainees fulfill important HPP functions, such as managing the reception desk, client intakes, client records in the database, and community outreach. They build office, computer, language, and writing skills in classes and continuing education programs at City College of San Francisco. They also participate in an outside internship with a collaborating community-based organization for additional work experience and exposure to potential employers.
Martha’s journey to creating HPP began in Africa. After a 10-year stint as an ICU nurse at San Francisco General Hospital, Martha returned to Africa, where she had been a teacher for the Peace Corps years before. In Somalia and the Sudan, she worked in refugee camps where she created a Community Health Outreach Program, a program she would later replicate as HPP. In 1989, She founded HPP to provide free prenatal care to at-risk pregnant women. In that first year, HPP provided prenatal care to 72 women. Twenty-six years later, HPP has a staff of 80 (half former clients) that serves 4,000 families annually.
Martha holds an M.P.H., Maternal and Child Health, from the University of California, Berkeley and a B.A. in Modern Languages from the University of San Francisco. She has received numerous honors for her work including an honorary doctorate from University of San Francisco, a CNN Hero Award, a James Irvine Foundation Leadership Award, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Community Health Leadership Award and the San Francisco Foundation’s Community Leadership Award.
