In her talk, Forty Autumns, former intelligence operative Nina Willner will discuss Russian authoritarianism in the Cold War and today's global threat to democracy.

Nina Willner, a former US Army CPT, was the first female to run intelligence operations on Soviet territory during the Cold War. Following a career in intelligence, Nina worked in Russia, Belarus and the Czech Republic for the US government in the fields of human rights and rule of law and later for a number of NGOs and charities, focusing mainly on education and women’s and children’s causes.

Her debut book, published in October 2016 by HarperCollins William Morrow, FORTY AUTUMNS: A Family’s Story of Courage and Survival on Both Sides of the Berlin Wall, is a sweeping history of the Cold War that pieces together the inspiring tale of Willner’s family, divided by the Iron Curtain for more than forty years.

Publisher’s Weekly called FORTY AUTUMNS “an epic, thrilling and relevant read.” Kirkus Reviews praised the book for its celebration of the “enduring resilience of the human spirit,” and The Christian Science Monitor named FORTY AUTUMNS one of its “Top 15 Nonfiction Books of 2016.”

Nina currently lives in Washington, DC and Istanbul.
