Sign Language at New Trier

Hannah Yulish and Lauren Piotrowski are juniors at New Trier High School. They are Co-eads of the New Trier Sign Language Club.  They demonstrated some basic signs,  stressing that the American Sign Language alphabet is only used to sign proper nouns. Each country has its own sign language, with the American Sign Language being close to the French version.
They use their skills to communicate with the special education students as ELS helpers in classrooms and mentors in the High Five Choir. Sign language is also used to teach lyrics to students with different abilities for their enjoyment of group singing as was demonstrated by a video of students signing “Imagine” by the Beatles. Involvement in the Language Club Club has shaped Hannah and Lauren's interest in the field which they are considering as future careers. It was a pleasure to see how much they enjoy helping their fellow students.
