We had our second virtual “lunch” meeting last Wednesday, April 15. Sixteen members attended. Rich Brill displayed a picture of the American flag, so we were able to follow our tradition of reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Art Sutton related his recent experience on a cruise ship during the current COVID-19 restriction period. That was quite a story; he was amazingly upbeat about how well the cruise line treated him and the other passengers, despite the refusal of various ports to let his ship dock. John Held reported that at the April Board meeting, the Finance Committee was authorized to designate an additional $10,000 for a special COVID-19 assistance contribution, with the Community Service Committee being charged with allocating this contribution. Frank Candioto updated everyone on the Community Service Committee’s contribution strategy. Since this is such an important way for our Club to support organizations that serve those in need during this “stay-at-home” time, the Committee is considering allocating more money to fewer organizations in order to have a greater impact. Frank also reported on his virtual meeting with the Harbor Club’s Presidents Elect regarding possible joint projects. Future meetings are planned. Debora Morris related that donations can now be received online through our website, wilmetterotary.org. "Donate" links have been provided for general contribution, EREY, and the Satellite project. Terry Porter reminded us that EREY is coming due. We are way behind our pledge number of $5000. (See Terry's article in this issue.) Sharon Weingarten is working closely with Jackie Granat, who is feeling better, to organize the scholarship program. The schools will be contacted soon. There were some new faces for this meeting, but there were also some missing. It is planned to have a virtual “lunch” meeting every Wednesday at noon. All members are encouraged to join the meetings via Zoom. John Held is sending emails with a link to join the meetings. If you do not receive John's email with the Zoom link, email him at johnjheld@gmail.com |
