March 17 Program -  Family Service Center
Renee Dominguez, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist who serves as the Executive Director of the Family Service Center (FSC), a local not-for-profit community mental health agency that provides counseling, crisis response, outreach, and education to the Wilmette, Glenview, Northbrook and Kenilworth communities.

The center provides help to individuals dealing with stress, emotional disorders, adjustment disorders, anxiety disorders, mood disorders, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), substance use disorders, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorders (ADHD), and Non-Suicidal Self-Injury (NSSI).  Since COVID, they’ve had to shift to a Telehealth Platform, making  Webinar presentations, a VirtualConnect discussion group for school staffs, parent programming and creating a Resilience Builder Program for youth.

The mental health challenges caused by COVID are dramatic.  In an August,2020 poll among adults by the CDC:
-- 30% had significant anxiety or depression
-- 26% had symptoms of trauma or stress related disorder
--16% had significant substance use increase
-- 10.7% had considered suicide in the last 30 days.

2021 Fundraiser Planned for September
Our Fundraising Committee is planning to have an outdoor fundraising event in September.  We hope it will be a 4-club collaboration with the Wilmette Harbor, Winnetka/Northfield and Glencoe Clubs.  We will be raising funds for Our Place, a center for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities. Originally planned for June, the date was shifted to a time when people will feel more comfortable to join outdoor events after most have been vaccinated.

While still in the planning stages, our concept is to have a jazz concert performed by local high school bands, at the Wallace Bowl in Gillson Park.  Sponsorships will be our focus at this time.  Our committee will meet after the Club meeting on Wednesday, April 21.  We welcome any and all members to join us.
World Water Day - March 22

World Water Day Focuses on Water’s Importance

The COVID-19 pandemic has made it clearer than ever that hand washing — which requires a safe water source — is essential to our health. Yet more than 2 billion people worldwide don’t have access to clean water. Since 2014, The Rotary Foundation has invested more than $51 million in global grants to enable clubs to carry out projects that help people around the world with clean water, sanitation, and hygiene. For World Water Day on 22 March, learn how you can get involved in a water project .

Volunteer Opportunity
 Beach Clean-up
Our district and many districts are involved in the Great Lakes Watershed Clean up as part of Earth day celebration.  Our district, 6440 is participating and enthusiastically supporting the event.

The Wilmette Harbor Rotary Club has organized a beach clean-up for Saturday, April 24 from 10am-noon and have invited us to join them. They have selected Elmwood Beach and will meet there on April 24.  Contact George Pearce  (geoknox@comcast.net) of the Harbor Club for details.

You may have heard about the Alliance between Rotary and Toastmasters International.  But like me, you may not know much about Toastmasters, or about what happens at their meetings.  Here's your chance to find out!  Next Tuesday at 7PM, "attend" a demo Toastmasters meeting, learning how both novice and experienced speakers hone their skills and get valuable feedback.  Speakers have been tasked with speaking about the benefits of the partnership. It'll get you thinking about how you can work with your local Toastmasters club, and they with you!   Registration Required Click here to receive Zoom link.

This Friday (March 19th) at noon, Dr. Damon Arnold will be featured in our Speakers Series on COVID Vaccination.  Dr Arnold, a former Director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, a distinguished veteran and recipient of the Legion of Merit from President Obama, and a respected leader in the public health industry, will give his perspective of the impact of and reactions to COVID-19 in society and and address factors leading to mistrust of the vaccination in the Black community.  Please share the attached graphic and this link - https://fb.me/e/Lm92AIjm - within your communities; the link takes you directly to the Facebook event.  And join us at noon Friday on Facebook Live to hear Dr. Arnold.
