Ellen Young, who is chairperson for District 6440 Foundation and for Paul Harris Society Development, along with John Mulherin, District Grants chair, presented an overview of how The Rotary Foundation (TRF) and district grants work. Ellen gave us a history of how TRF started when Paul Harris died in 1947. She commended our club for the many global projects we have initiated and for which we received global grants. John Told us how district grants are funded and determined.

From 1994 to 2016, our club was granted $1456, 623 in global grants for a variety of humanitarian projects throughout the world.  This does not even include the projects from 2017-2021.  Past projects involved some of the following: Water wells in Angola, Water treatment plant in India, Agricultural  training in Ghana; Medical equipment to South Africa and Guyana;  Wheelchairs to Turkey.  Current projects include Angola wells, Ultrasound equipment in Uganda.

You are invited to an information session by Zoom on May 26 at 7:30 am featuring Wilmette’s Police Chief Pat Collins and Fire Chief Brian Lambel.  We will also joined by such distinguished guests as Michael Braiman-Village Manager, Sonia Plunkett-Village President, Kathy Dodd-Village Trustee, Steve Wilson-Wilmette Park District and Anthony Auston-Wilmette Library. 

This meeting is the first of the series sponsored by the Wilmette Harbor Rotary Club to further link the Rotary efforts to our immediate Community which would inform both volunteer and grand efforts going forward.

Our major fundraising event  on Wednesday, September 22  will be an outdoor event at the Wallace Bowl in Gillson Park, Wilmette.  The focus will be providing support for Our Place, a center for persons with developmental disabilities from the local communities.  We plan to have 3 professional local bands perform. The Winnetka/Northfield Rotary Club and the Wilmette Harbor Rotary are assisting us in the planning. Event tickets will be $25 per person. 

 

Jim Pockross of the Wilmette Harbor club has generously donated a week's stay in his home in Scottsdale, Arizona.  We plan to use this as a vacation package for the raffle, by including airfare and local activities. Additional raffle prizes are being developed. Raffle tickets will be $50 for one or 3 for $100.

 

Our focus at this stage is finding business sponsors and individual donors for the event.  A package of information has been developed for emailing to prospective sponsors and donors.  Anyone with business contacts who might become potential sponsors should contact Debora Morris or John Held with this information.
