Polio Update from RI
Our speaker this week will tell us more about the outbreak of polio in the US, as well as what the End Polio Now campaign is doing. Following is an excerpt from a message from Carol Pandak, Director of Polio Plus at RI.

"The recent detection of the vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 case in New York and isolates in several environmental samples collected in London, are stark reminders that as long as polio exists anywhere, it is a threat everywhere. It also highlights the importance of vaccination as the only form of protection against polio and other vaccine-preventable diseases and the work that needs to be done in our own communities to encourage the uptake of vaccines. Also, as the world gets closer to zero wild poliovirus cases, it is increasingly important to track all forms of the virus wherever they may appear, including in polio-free regions."
August 24 Program - RI Webinar
Several members watched an RI webinar entitled "5 Attributes of Successful and Agile Clubs", then the webinar concepts were discussed at the club meeting immediately afterward.  The five attributes identified were having:  Strong Leadership,  Multiple projects/Events, Visibility in the Community, Member Engagement and A Clear Growth Plan.  Among the areas discussed for our club were:
  • Better publicizing of our club's projects and upcoming speakers.
  • Contacting less active members to find out how better to get them engaged.
  • Enhancing our social media presence
  • Contacting other New Trier Rotary clubs to discuss having a combined "Rotary Informational" event of some sort.
  • Reactivating the Membeship Committee

Next Lunch Packing September 6
Our RAD group's ongoing project to pack lunch bags fo the homeless has a new schedule.  It is now a MONTHLY project.  The next packing date is September 6. They will continue to meet at St. Joseph's Church on Lake Avenue at 6pm on the designated days.  Most nights, the group and other volunteers have packed and delivered 100-150 lunches. Volunteers are welcome. Contact Mariana Al Far (marianafar@gmail.com) if you would like to participate. A RAD member meeting will follow the lunch packing.

They will continue to do this the 1st Tuesday of the month, but our goal is to pass this off to another local group who we will train and pay for the food for them to pack.  Mariana has been in touch with the moderators for a special needs group of students at New Trier who are looking for a project to take on.  We have to wait until school is back in session to discuss this with them and see how soon they can take over.  Mariana will contact St. Joseph Church and confirm we only need the Joseph Room on the 2nd Tuesday of the month instead of every Tuesday.

Wilmette Happenings
THE Wilmette Block Party - Save the date for THE Wilmette Block Party, to celebrate Wilmette’s Sesquicentennial, Saturday, September 10. The event culminates a year of celebrations with a day full of activities, performances, food and drink, and most of all an opportunity to celebrate Wilmette’s 150th birthday with family, friends and neighbors. Volunteers are needed here as well.  Maybe our club could organize a group of volunteers. For more information and to volunteer, click here

Building Peaceful Bridges
Building Peaceful Bridges

Lori Lucchetti and Ahlam Al-Jebory, co-founders of the nonprofit, Building Peaceful Bridges (BPB), will share the work they are doing to assist refugees in gaining a sense of belonging in America and achieving self sufficiency. Ahlam, a former refugee from Iraq, has survived war, torture, prison, the tragic death of her eldest son, and the challenges of starting over, time and again. Her incredible journey from Baghdad to Damascus to Chicago is told in A Disappearance in Damascus by Deborah Campbell. Lori, President of BPB, has worked in corporate, government and nonprofit sectors. She has led BPB since 2015, transforming it from an informal gathering of committed women to a growing and impactful nonprofit organization.  For more information about BPB, see https://www.buildingpeacefulbridges.org/.
