BEST WISHES FOR A GREAT 2020
Holiday Fundraiser Update
We are still working on the final numbers from our "Change a Life Forever" Holiday Fundraiser.  Preliminary results are a net of $9900, which exceeds our budgetary goal. Thank you again to all those who participated and donated to our major projects and foundation fund.

For those who made monetary donations during the fundraiser, a "thank you "was prepared for your tax records; see Debora Morris if you did not receive this document.
POLIO MAKING A COMEBACK
Polio cases in 2019 total 117, up from 33 in 2018. Vaccine- induced polio in 2018 totaled 104 and in 2019, 216.  CDC is in the midst of sending up to 100 additional personnel to Africa to help track, manage and wipe out vaccine-derived polio outbreaks over a six-month period. 18,500,000 Children Saved from the Paralysis of Polio Since 1988.

As the global effort to eradicate polio gets tantalizing close to its goal, the program is running in to new challenges. One of the biggest obstacles this year is the proliferation of so-called "vaccine-derived" polio outbreaks.

Conventional polio caused by the traditional form of the disease is now only occurring in two countries in the world — Afghanistan and Pakistan. The World Health Organization calls this form "wild" polio and there've been roughly 100 cases so far this year. This is a tiny number compared to the 350,000 cases that occurred globally before the Global Polio Eradication Initiative was launched in 1988.

But what's troubling now is that there are currently more kids being paralyzed by cases of vaccine-derived polio than by the original "wild" variety. Read more

Random Acts of Kindness
Random Acts of Kindness Day February 17th. Plan now to be part of this district-wide endeavor to spread kindness throughout our area. Participation in this event is one of the optional community service components of the Public Image matching grant. The idea is for all the Rotary clubs in the entire District to be doing something as a Random Act of Kindness (RAK) on that one day.

Our club will be serving dinner at Just Harvest again this year as our RAK.  Please contact Frank Candioto to coordinate carpooling to North Rogers Park. We will need about 5 volunteers to do the serving.  Other members should create some form of RAK for that week, and report to the club at a meeting or through the Spoke. There are dozens of way to show kindness above and beyond.
Kids Against Hunger Project!
Next Saturday is the Day -Hope to See You There
The 2020 Kids Against Hunger food packaging event is scheduled for Saturday, March 14, 2020, 11am to 1pm at the Winnetka Community House, 670 Lincoln Ave., Winnetka. We are sponsoring this event again this year.  This project, which our club has participated in for several years, packages food supplements for hungry and malnourished children in Nicaragua.  It's always a fun gathering. Our Satellite Club will be there with almost 24 participants. This event is free to our members since we are sponsoring the event.
Members Corner
John Held - Before accepting his President-Elect position, John Held, his wife, daughter, and son-in-law, planned to visit New Zealand and Australia.   They left on January 1 and will be returning February 10th. Club members should contact Frank Candioto who will, more than ably, serve as Club President during this six week period  — as well as during the upcoming 2020-2021 Rotary year.
