For the second time during the pandemic year, the Rotary Club of Wilmette awarded scholarships to students from New Trier, Loyola Academy and Regina Dominican High Schools. This year has been particularly challenging for both students and school staff due to remote learning. For 40 years, local outstanding students have been recipients of scholarships from the Wilmette Rotary Club. College counselors from the three local high-schools recommend students who have demonstrated leadership skills, academic excellence, and service to their community and to the world at large. From New Trier High School, winners are Grace Jeon , Teagan Frye who will both attend the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor and twins Layal and Leen Alrez who will pursue their college education locally at National Lewis University. More on these young people in the next issue. The Rotary Club of Wilmette was represented at award ceremonies at New Trier and Regina Dominican by Youth Service Chair Jackie Granat. As with life over the last year and a half, these events were modified to meet the protocol of the time with masks and social distancing. At New Trier, the senior awards ceremony was held indoor with students being rapidly ushered across the stage to accommodate the large number of recipients. At Regina Dominican, the convocation ceremony was held in an athletic field on a cold rainy 45-degree morning with chairs placed 6 feet apart and parents/friends in winter attire, wrapped in blankets. The graduates in their white caps and gowns, provided warmth to the event with their cheers and enthusiasm. Of note at New Trier’s ceremony were students receiving awards on non-academic subjects, including applied arts in culinary arts, engineering excellence, technical and carpentry excellence, as well as business education. |
