ShelterBox and Rotary - 10th Anniversary
This year, Rotary and ShelterBox are celebrating the 10th anniversary of our official partnership — and more than 20 years of working together to support families whose lives have been devastated by disaster and conflict. We’ve combined our resources and provided emergency temporary housing and other vital equipment to help families immediately after a disaster — and to put them on a path to long-term recovery. To learn more about how your club or district can get involved or to request assistance, visit the Rotary-ShelterBox partnership page.

Special Program for Girls - The Hero in You
DG Kevin notified us of a special program happening Saturday, April 9 in Barrington. Sponsored by several Rotary Clubs and Rahab's Daughters, this day-long program is for girls 10-18 years old, to educate, empower and inspire them. Entitled BRAVE: “This is Me: The Hero in You", the program is packed with lots of empowering, inspirational and encouraging activities for girls, teaches them to be strong and free, and celebrates diversity of all colors, shapes and sizes and connects communities to work together. The program is creative and encourages students to envision a world defined by human rights principles. In summary, attendees are educated on the practices that traffickers and abusers use to manipulate victims emotionally.  All young girls who participate will benefit from the powerful impact sessions and activities to motivate and educate them in important life principles.

Please recommend this program to any girls you know, aged 10-18.  Registration is free at: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/brave-this-is-me-the-hero-in-you-tickets-290837551947
Next Lunch Bag Prep- May 3
Our RAD (Rotary After Dark) group will be making bagged lunches again, to be delivered to organizations that provide services to the homeless.  This group will meet Tuesday, May 3 at 6pm at St. Joseph Church in Wilmette. Bagged lunches are delivered to Connections for the Homeless and an affordable housing organization. Email Mariana Al Far  (MarianaFar@gmail.com) if you would like to participate.  More volunteers equals less time spent.

Walking???

Our fundraiser, Rotary Hope Walk for the Homeless, officially began May 5 with a Walk-a-thon.  The 10-day Walk-a-thon will be followed by a 5K fun Run/Walk event in Gillson Park on May 14..  Proceeds will go to support organizations that provide services to homeless people in Chicago and the suburbs (Connections for the Homeless, La Case Norte, and others).  Those who register to walk will solicit others to pledge $2-10 per mile walked from May 5-14.  Those not walking during the 10-days, can walk on May 14th at the fun walk/run in Gillson Park.

The Rotary clubs of Wilmette Harbor, Winnetka/Northfield, Evanston, Evanston Lighthouse and Skokie Valley have agreed to join us and publicize the event

On Saturday May 14, we will have the 5k fun Walk/Run in Gillson Park from 10am to noon.  The 5K will begin at the Wallace Bowl at 10am.  We will explain the specific route to take through the park,  register participants who did not yet register online,  recognize our sponsors and our fundraising recipients. Food and drink will be available at the end of the 5k.

Ticket prices are the same for those who register to walk and for those just attending the May 14 event;  $100 for families (of any number), $50 for individuals, and $25 for students (under age 22).

Registration (tickets) and Donations are available online from our website http://wilmetterotary.org .  Click the red buttons as indicated on the webpage.

EREY Link

Even if you missed the yearend deadline for a 2021 tax deduction, you can still make a contribution for the current Rotary year.  Remember part of your contribution comes back to our Club to fund our service programs. Ray Zeiss has announced that starting April 1, any member who is currently $500 or less away from a $1000 contribution, can become a Paul Harris Fellow with credits from our past EREY contributions; also, contributions of less than $500 will also be matched.

Support for Ukrainian People
From DG Kevin:  There are several ways that you and your Rotary club can provide aid.  We encourage you to support any legitimate humanitarian efforts as you may desire.

Note:  Our club voted to donate at least $2500 to UNICEF. UNICEF aims to reach vulnerable children and families on the move from "Blue Dot" centers strategically located along transit routes. As many as 4 million people are expected to flee from Ukraine between March 2022 and July 2022 seeking protection and support.

1.  For those who would like to donate through the District 6440 Charitable Fund, District 6440 has activated an online Ukraine donation portal.    https://form.jotform.com/62386028569971

2: Our River Cities club has a well established relationship with the Rotary Club of Kyiv International and is directly supporting their efforts on the ground providing food, blankets, hygiene and baby needs.  The Rotary Club of Winnetka-Northfield is supporting this effort with the opportunity to expedite your charitable donation using this secure link  .

3.  Rotary International partner Shelter Box is fully engaged and on the ground in Ukraine.  Learn more about their objectives and directly support their efforts here.

4. The Rotary Foundation has established a specific Ukraine Disaster Response Channel supporting humanitarian efforts. For more information and to support this specific campaign visit THIS LINK.
